Thanks Mike, i'll reinstall a cut off valve, i'm actually waiting for a manual one to show up, boosting the start up voltage is a bit out of my league methinks. I'd like to change the pump especially as i've no idea how old the one fitted is , it sits very close to the alternator, it's the dynamo type, i've never fancied trying to get it off, does it look doable to you without removing the alternator ?, there's a photo of it , third post down. Other folk say yes but i'm not so sure, i suppose removing the top off the fuel pump will create more space. Is it the SSP 113-127-025/F with 100mm rod £36.96 the one you mean. Will my rod be that length or will i need a new one?.
I'd rather take the alternator off or loosen it than take the top off the pump but it looks like it might wangle off the studs anyway. You can try that without taking the pipes off, just lift it up a bit and it should be obvious whether it's leaking. Or perhaps take that plate off the side where there should not be petrol.
I'd forgot about that plate !, if no evidence of fuel i guess it would mean it's not leaking into the sump. thanks.
Not the same but near enough - it looks like it's to access the spring. If all is well you'll find grease.

On my pump, there would always be a little wetness by the pin, but it evaporated once the pump had stopped, so I only really noticed when the bus had been on a run.
It was once greased, but it will fall out with time because its in a hot place. Petrol leaks will remove all the grease , and it will be very clean up there..
No fuel, i inserted a rolled up 'wick' of kitchen roll and had a poke around, dry !. I'll spray some grease in, after the engines been running a while to check for fuel. Thinking about it , there's a sort of a dark red glaze coating in there .
Most likely dried grease. Your troubles seem to be more carburettor fuel valve related as the petrol cannot run down from the pump and end up filling cylinders.
I fitted the manual fuel tap yesterday. High oil level may have been a false alarm, i forgot the front of van had been jacked up. Doh!. Started up and run ok. The odd thing i noticed was very little fuel came from hose disconnected from pump, after messing around fitting fuel 'tap' fuel came through but not gushing, more of a dribble. Filter underneath full of fuel. As i said, started up and ticked over ok, didn't drive , clamp and cover on etc.Thanks for your input.
Its surprising how little slope on a bus messes up the oil level. On mine , if I fill it to the top line when its on a 2 degree nose down slope, the oil level soon drops back to exactly half way between min and max, and stays there. If I check it on the level its still near the top.
I was referring to the fuel hose to the pump . That said i did a vid of the fuel pump squirting into a jar, didn't seem mega powerful. Don't think you put vids up on here can you?
