Either fit a distributor or remove the drive gear. If you remove the drive gear take care not to drop the thrust washer off the end.
Something is stuck then . Dizzy drive A daft bolt hidden that's hitting the flywheel (unlikely) Put a pencil in the spark plugs hole and turn the wheel make sure the Piston is moving up or down. Do all 4. Simple things first . Then take the heads off. Simple stuff first
could be on to something the distributor drive was out about 20mm so pushed it in,no difference,im wondering if that washer has dropped off and is jamming on something wont get any garage time for a couple of days now, if pull out the drive will i be able to see anything through the hole?
You’ll see the brass gear on the crankshaft. The distributor drive gear should have a spring on the top and one thrust washer on the bottom and if you’re going to strip the engine you might as well remove it. 20mm is enough for the washer to have dropped off the bottom so if it’s missing, I wouldn’t turn the engine again.
But only if the shim washer below it has not gone walkabout. You will have to look it up to see how far round you have to rotate the drive so that it drops in and rotates to the correct index position. No problem if you arent going to run the engine before working on it though... Its depressing if it has chewed the brass gear because to get to it and pop it off the crank and change it you may as well rebuild the engine on the way back.
ill report back in a week or so going to pull the drive out and see if i can see anything sinister, also i have one of those little cameras so i will poke that in for a look
Might be an idea to turn the engine upside down before pulling the dissy drive out. The washer is more likely to stay on the shaft then. Don’t suppose you have an engine stand?
It’s actually fairly difficult for that washer to drop down , particularly if the distributor drive is still in the engine and the engines not been turned upside down etc
Magnet on a stick picks the washer up if it doesnt come out with the drive gear.. also picks up the drive gear if you need it to first.. Really easy putting back in later dab of grease holds washer on the drive Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
pulled the dizzy drive, washer was where it should be, thinking i might pull the oil pump off next do they ever fail and stop engine turning?
Yes.. The pin through the cog, not the drive one can drift out...it then gets hit by river heads / bolt heads as they pass Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
I kind of get it. I bought a whole engine someone had given up on because it was utterly gutless and owner decided it was beyond hope. Turned out the distributor advance was stuck.
