My van is worth more as a burnt out shell than if I tried to sell it.
    Anyone got some matches

I know that’s tongue in cheek and though unlikely, if your insurers saw that comment - (and they do check out social media if they think they are being scammed) you’ve just lost any payout if your vehicle catches fire for any reason.

  3. It's further complicated as in my scenario above. I reckon on the open market I might be able to sell my van for £8500-ish. That's because tragically the market generally judges these vehicles on how they look superficially on the surface. And that is because 'the market' is to an extent made up of non-petrol head people who've done okay in life, have a bit of money spare and want to buy into 'the dream'.

Now, if heaven forbid something were to happen to my van and it was a total loss, I know for a fact that it'd cost me a damn sight more than £8.5k to find something as solid and usable as a replacement. So there's a clear argument for aiming as high as possible with any agreed valuation.

BTW, mines agreed at £10k but I'd be amazed if my insurance co. would pay that amount out and even if they did, with £10k I'd still struggle to get to where I am now with mine.

  4. So it's worth way more than 10k .
Could you replace it for 10k ??

Probably not - 15k would be a realistic figure .

    Just my tuppenceworth..

  5. That's my point, there's more than one way of measuring worth. There's what someone will pay you for it and then there's what it'd cost you to replace, sometimes the two can be worlds apart.

  6. That’s an interesting thing Moony about T5,6,7 any Beach side car parks in Cornwall usually have a selection of them,
They do seem to be the must have accessory now o_O
It’s now a case of spot the bay ,
they are definitely in decline now.

  7. Bays must be on the decline but they cant be the same price or sometimes more than a splitty.

Course they can. Condition and desireability is everything.

  9. When was the last time anyone saw a family actually camping in a split?. Most of them are day van/festival/classic rally show ponies.

  10. I do think that splits and bays have different markets. Splits look cooler but are worse to drive in almost every way and even if advertised as a "camper" rarely have a poptop. Bays have been helped by the increase in interest in covid camping and appeal to non-anoraks/hipsters/hedge-fund managers as a nice looking and practical camper. Thats why Bay prices are closer to split prices at the moment IMO.

  11. I think there are very few nice ones now,
There are plenty of people who think they either have a nice one
or they spend ££££££££ and think they will get it all back,or think because they have spent a fortune with some haphazard resto ,therefore expect to get it back,
    Well they won’t
The parts that are any good are expensive , one day it will be too expensive to sustain
For me it would be a relief to have a more stable market ,like I owned some other classic where the suppliers don’t screw them over

  12. I pulled up in a petrol station next to a mint 1974 westy. We got talking and the bloke was in full mid life crisis and he was boasting "its was this or a Porsche". They are non way the same thing. It's people like him driving up the cost. Also should of bought the Porsche

  13. I’ve just finished my resto, sent photos in to the insurance company, it has an agreed value far higher than I would get if I sold it .
Most people look at it and say “ that must be worth a fortune “. I’ve never understood the obsession with value. I built it how I wanted it, with the intention of using it. Mind you I have never added the receipts of what I spent, think I’d have a break down ...

If they weren’t expensive there would be no value in making parts , so we would have no vans ;)

  16. Prices of bugs have gone up because of this. I'm looking for a bug but can't find anything nice under 6 - 7K

bugs started going up 3-4 years ago , I sold my bug 20 years ago for nearly £6000, wouldn’t have got half that 10 years ago, now would probably get similar again

  18. It gets a bit daft when someone wants 8K for a 74 1303. A few years ago you could get loads of them all priced under 3K because no one wanted them.

  19. I think I spent in excess of 25+k and sold it for 11.5 k
One thing is for certain never assume it is an appreciating asset .. it’s a motor vehicle
    Would I buy another? Yes
    :)
