The cost of a bay

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by dookie, Sep 7, 2020.

  1. Just looking on ebay for nothing in particular and noticed that bays are expensive and in some case more than a splitty. That can be right can it

I’d noticed the high prices in VW camper and commercial mag private for sale adverts too. Mid twenties. Seems a little optimistic...

Even without looking at the add that prototype bay looks next to mint, but on the cheap side , splits slumped a long time ago

  5. There has to be a point it cant go any higher. 20k for bay seems to me to much. I wonder how much the most expensive one sold for?

There where bays being advertised for 30K + a few years back. No idea if they sold for that though..

  7. For £35k it better come with £20k worth of gold under the seats

  8. 20k is the guaranteed value with my insurance company far a T2 in good solid condition. Not concourse but fairly mint.
25k is top concourse condition more or less as it left the factory.
However it depends on how much someone is prepared to pay.

Mine’s agreed value has been £18k for a few years as that was the maximum available. I thought I’d possibly a little on the low side as thought prices had dropped lately but seeing that maybe I’m underestimating it a bit.
It’s no show winner but it’s pretty good.

now that’s a really really nice one

  12. I value mine at about £8-9k and reckon I'd probably struggle at that. As despite being 100% solid underneath, rust free Cali import beam, good doors, strong, leak free 1600 motor, clean 70%ish original Devon interior, jump in and go anywhere, it DOESN'T have shiny new paint or lots of Chinese chromed 'goodies' all over it! Also needs rear arches and one corner + battery tray so in a lot of punter's eyes it's a tatty rot box! Immaterial anyway because as long as I'm alive and got somewhere to keep it, it's never going to be for sale :).

  13. I'm sure there will be someone along soon to tell us that the market for these old camper vans is declining rapidly.

You’d think this year more than any would have seen an increased demand what with all the staycations going on...

Agreed value is BS. It’s Not what it’s worth. As the saying goes, only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Some of the agreed values on this site are optimistic to say the least.

Agreed value is what the insurance company WILL pay if your bus is a write off, regardless of market value. Don't knock it!

You know how inflation works don’t you?!

What kippers a rise in values, I think, is the abolition of MOT’s....that means the decline in numbers has levelled out a lot....so rarity ceases to be a factor, though many vans are left to die a long death.

The second issue is the disconnect between old and new I.e. T5,6,7 owners in the majority have very little care about splits and bays, theirs is a stand-alone culture now.....so that kippers demand as fewer kids will remember holidays in their vans.

Most of us here are grandparent generation, not all, but most and those grand kids aren’t spending significant time in these fans as far as I can see.

Last one is a dying market in terms of skills able to work on these at a reasonable cost, and most of the consumable parts are made of butter.

Culturally, this country’s tolerance of roughing it makes these small vans a hard sell in terms of multi week holidays.
