Not everyone with a type 4 knows this - QED, me. I spoke to a buggy friend yesterday who is doing a type 2ltr bus for his son and he didn't know about it either but thanked me for the warning. I think we need a sticky post somewhere on this one to help any other unknowing bods avoid potential disaster. I hope I've been lucky enough to avoid a calamity. What a daft design!
I couldn’t agree more. VW made a lot of improvements when they made the type 4 but fixing the strainer cover the way they did wasn’t one of them – it’s as daft as the way a type 1 flywheel is attached.
New case..still got that one down the side of the garage tried drilling all the way through and using a bolt but got a replacement just in case. Wasn't leaking, I was just cleaning when it went pear shaped.. this was the one with welded lugs on the pick up tube.. sometimes done anyway to stop the case thing happening.. You can just make out the two half nuts weird on the rim of the pick up here..And the piece of case I found Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
If you said "Hi I've just bought a bus" on the samba bay window forum, the first reply would be "don't tighten the strainer bolt!!!".
No I sheared the stud holding the strainer plate on trying to undo it.. the found the case issue and the pieces later when taking apart to fit a new pick up tube.. ended up a rebuild while I was there.. like you do.. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Trust me Andrew, when the new gaskets arrive tomorrow I fully intend this to be the last time I EVER take mine off.
They're for calming down after the near heart attack I've had over this bleedin' bolt. So stuff or no stuff?
