i finally got the Bosch fuel injection running. It still needs dialling in to get it just right. Overall performance has increased across the board from economy to acceleration. My main worry now is crankcase pressure, it's a lot higher than when it had carbs. I've managed to stop oil escaping through dipstick and oil filler tubes by plugging and sealing but am concerned crankcase pressure may be too high. I did fit an inline PCV valve although the hose id is smaller than original hose, so maybe increases pressure? Do I need a different valve or can it be vented, or am I worrying too much Any help appreciated
One of these type things...positive crankcase ventilation valve Think basically it closes up if engine backfires to stop fumes igniting in the case? I do have a different type. It looks more like a filler cap, it might allow more flow. It just means I have to change vacuum hoses to fit it.
Just looked at Majors L Jetronic and the breather box has a 1" diameter hose venting to the single lower most port on the S boot:
I think @davidoft is pointing out the ATM machine in the room., and the stack of DVD discs in the corner. And the computer running TCP/IP protocol.
A T1 engine has option A: a 20mm ID hose with a stock breather , and option B: a 5mm ID hose with an EMPI shineeeey oil filler. . Option B has the crank case venting round the crank pulley.
Breather is from a carb set up. I assumed ii needed the valve for the FI Sent from my MAR-LX1A using Tapatalk
@Pumpkin jack have you got any more images of your setup, so we can help you out more. Try and get some of the S boot and the breather hose. sounds like you are almost sorted, I think you need the breather same as the image I posted. this thread, eventually, details the differences in breather boxes and describes the one you should have as part of the FI (L Jetronic in this case) and what previous variants use. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251133&highlight=type breather boxes
Just found this on samba site https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5799711 I had already bought one of these, which is a budget version I'll just have to reroute the vacuum hoses...again! I'll post some pics later
That's an impressive rats's nest of wires and pipes. Snotty will have to go for a nice long walk outside if he sees that.
This is what our set up, as far as I know, original, excusing the labels as I’m taking the motor out.
Great photos. I can see a couple of differences. I didn't fit the carbon canister. (Wasn't sure where to connect lower r/side hose) I also had to bypass the air filter with the dizzy vacuum line as I was loosing the vacuum through the filter before it got to the dizzy. (Could be related to not connecting the canister??) Also accelerator cable comes through in a different spot from a previous carb setup. I also blanked off the egr valve as you have done.
Thanks, that's the look I was going for. It's to take your eyes away from the chipped paint on the fan shroud
I particularly like the wire that disappears into the heater ducting in the foreground of the first picture. That same picture would make a good jigsaw puzzle.
I can’t imagine the carbon canister making a huge impact, that said, how much air passes through from the fan housing? The only other hose is from the vapour line from the fuel tank. if it’s running great, performance wise, I think you’ve pretty much got it sorted. Does the crankcase breather from carb’d motors lead to more back pressure, perhaps the mushroom vent cap releases it.
I really would tidy up/sheath all that stuff going to the coil +ve. It's not fused, and if it chafes...
