Hi guys, recently bought a '73 Devon top and in the middle of planning the restoration looking into fitting a double bed in the roof for the kids, how have you done this? Is it a case of welding angle iron in place and making up boards or is there a kit that can be bought? Thanks in advance!
I like the idea of a double rather than 2 bunks, we have a 79 Danbury roof, anybody tried fitting a double in th roof?!!
Following on from this, is anyone able to shed any light on the attachment point of the angle iron to support these roof beds? I am doing a resto on a Devon with the two-part early straight-up roof, which I have never had attached to the van. It strikes me that the only place to secure the angle iron is on the bit where the outer roof is bent up vertically, just below the poptop spring mechanism. Is this strong enough, and can you really close the roof with the boards stacked at the back with the angle mounted so high? Doesn't this interfere with the spring mechanism when closed too? I was thinking of attaching the angle to the sloped inner roof, as this looks stronger, but would have to fab some brackets to make the angle horizontal. Any tips or pics of these installations without headlining would be really helpful. Thanks.
I srcrewed mine through the lip of the van into the pop top frame down both sides if that makes sense,i can send a picture if you like, just taken mine off the weekend as the kids are now young adults and they rather sleep in the awning
look's an amazing job. i remember talking to a chap that made them i asked question about weight................what he did was two 9-12mm ply boards laminated to a steel subframe in the middle.
I only used self tapping screws it was strong enough for me to sleep on the top Hope the pics make sense
