Hello It's been literally a year since I last posted - after my husband died of cancer I was determined to keep using our late bay - I posted here and got lots of supportive advice and am now really confident in driving Charlie out and about. Just back from another Glasto (we park in Spring Ground, Disabled Campsite) - while we were there the winder mechanism on the from passenger window broke, thank goodness it was (mostly ) dry as the window was stuck in the down position! I am now going to attempt to replace it with a part I ordered from ebay - any top tips? Steph www.stephnimmo.com
Which part has broken? It could just be the weld on the lifter channel broken. Take the door card off and see whats what.
You're right, that's my starting point, need to take the door card off first - will have a look in a mo, hopefully it's something straightforward
1) Get an original second hand part from a breakers as the repo ones are rubbish and only last about 15 minutes. 2) Don't buy a brand new repo one as you are wasting your money
I'm in Wimbledon, SW London - I've taken the card panel off and the mechanism is rusted & rotten. Got a replacement from ebay (not repo) - but the repair is beyond me - I'm limited to reupholstering the R&R and putting down flooring! Anyone live nearby who can come and have a look - I normally get it serviced at Vdub in chichester but too far to drive for what should be reasonably simple for someone who knows what they are doing
My dad lives in Balham if you can wait until I come up to London next I'll do it for you, in the mean time spray everything with WD40
Gonna say my devons was rusty as out and that fixed it along with a good old fashioned smack with a hammer when it got stuck open.
The window has slipped out of the mechanism and the bits that would hold it in place are all rusted. Taped up the window with a bin bag and my good old standby - gaffer tape, essential item for my bus! @Barry Haynes - I know the Dog & Fox well! Going to chat to my neighbour who restores old Hillman Imps as projects to see if he can help, will let you know otherwise will hold out for when you're next in Balham
That's easy enough to do. You can lift the window up and out of the way and prop it on a few lumps of wood. Undo the 2 bolts that hold the window channel to the mechanism. Bolt on the new one. Fit the rubber. Waggle the glass down into the rubber.
If it is just the clamping strip and not the mech itself, it's a straightforward fix as above. If the mech's rotten, unfortunately you have to strip everything out of the door.
Haven't done it yet - combination of rain & sorting out teenagers! Just to check - to replace the whole winder mechanism, do I need to take the interior panel off or can it slot in? (Have taken the card/handles off)
