Window problem.

  1. Hi

I had an occurrence recently where the drivers window collapsed( for want of a better description) down into the drivers door. This was overnight and it was definitely ok when I wound it up the night before.
I stripped off the door card and after 10 mins managed to push it back up and the mechanism reengaged itself without any apparent adjustment from me.
Is this a common problem? How can I either stop it happening again or do a permanent fix?

    Thanks

Fit the rubber gasket on the bottom properly - it holds and CLAMPS the glass:thumbsup:

It won't be the rubber strip if it collapsed on its own overnight. Someone broke it for you or you left your window open.

  4. the mechanism is worn ,replace before it gets worse ,takes 45 minutes...

    very common problem

  5. Thanks , think thats its worn too! Window was definitely closed at night. Dont suppose anyone better equiped than me could fit the new parts ??

  6. I had the bus in a local VW garage yesterday and he said it was the best he'd seen - Yey!
No issues to report but the drivers window regulator was dodgy. Well I already knew that.
I have ordered a new part form JK and will have a go at fitting it.
A question for anyone who has done it before:-
Do I need to remove the glass from inside the door to change the regulator? If so I assume that I will have to take out the small vent window also.

    Thanks

    Tyke

  7. No.
I did this recently without having to remove the glass. You can chock the glass into any position you like with 2x1 battens strutted off the bottom of the door once you've undone the metal channel (at the bottom of the glass) from the regulator. I'll post a couple of pictures up tomorrow.

  8. vwed - Thanks that would be helpful.

  9. The issue I had was that my cab door glass suddenly dropped to the bottom.
I knew what the problem would be - the flange on the metal window lifter channel at the bottom of the glass had broken off - it's a rather weak design. I also decided once the grab handle, window winder crank and door card were off that I would also take out the regulator as that window had always been difficult to wind up and down.
I googled various threads on various forums about doing the above and there was some conflicting information. Some threads (probably referring to early bays) and the Bentley manual suggest that the glass can easily be removed via the bottom. reference to the photo below will show clearly that that's not possible in a late bay due to the flange at the bottom left with the blue slider.
I didn't want to take the quarter light and assorted seals etc out for a top removal of the glass as I anticipated that this would lead to other issues.
In order to get the regulator out you have to remove the pairs of screws holding it to the door frame and the window lifter. The hard part is creating a big enough gap to be able to pull it down in the top corner near the winder crank.
This is because there is a flange inside the frame very close up against the bottom channel part of the quarter light. To create the gap get a bar/screwdriver/whatever as pictured, insert in hole as per picture below and force open the gap. It will go but is tricky.
    Installation is the reverse.
Please note photo with screwdriver taken after re-assembly with winder crank in position.
Once out it was obvious why the window was hard to wind as the top section of it was twisted - probably from previous bodged attempts at removal. So I made a jig on a sheet piece of ply and carefully reshaped it then lubed it up. Now works as it should.
As to the lifter channel, after some thought I chocked the glass up off the inside bottom of the door with some 2x1 battens at a suitable height to get at it. With a rubber mallet and a block of wood I carefully tapped off the old channel working from alternate ends after having lubed the whole lot. Then I carefully tapped on the replacement channel (OEM rather than repro) and bolted back to the regulator.

  10. Thanks very much. Thats great. Funny tho, I just wound down the passenger side and the glass stayed up. The problem seems to be that the seals are all nice and new, so they "grab" the glass on 3 sides quite nicely. This has pulled the glass out of the channel. I have temporary fixed with "No Nails" to fix the glass into the channel. I have ordered new channel, rubber seal and regulator to replace the lot. Im fed up of praying that the window will work. Rest of the bus seems spot on though.

Take care with your new window winders. Relative to original the new ones are made of cheese and will strip easily if the glass doesnt slide easily or you jam the window up hard with the winder. I went through about three after the restorers/fraggles trashed my original winders.

  12. anyone ever noticed that some cab door glass is taller than others by about 10mm? Same profile. corners radii etc. just taller...

  13. Yes, I've got both sizes in my collection.

  15. I have a JK replacement ready to fit. Is it worth it if they're made of putty? or should I try and get a OEM / used one?

  17. How easy is it to getth eexternal door handles off?
I have 3 different keys for the doors. The previous owner replaced the door handles rather than refurbish the old ones. I have the originals so im going to either:-
    • Take the barrels out of the origial handles and fit into the new ones or
    • Refurbish and rechrome the old ones.
Ive seen how to remove the barrels but i dont want to take the handles off and not be able to refit them as Im cack handed.

    hello tyke2
theres just 2 little bolts holdingt them on

  19. Ta kev. Im going to go fo rit and strip the door down. I suppose my worry is the "ease of dismantiling is directly disproportionate to the skill needed to reassemble"!

Old barrels don't fit new handles. :(
Don't drop them into the bottom of the door or they disappear forever.
