The rocker will leave the valve behind making a mahoosive valve gap, then smack into it each rev if you're lucky. If not the push rod would jump out of place. To stop the engine turning by hand this would be something you would spot.
Nothing coming up on the magnet. Looking down each hole, number 1 is almost at full stroke I think and it jams. There is nothing visible in there. But if it had been running, it could be well stuck whatever it is. Not sure what to do now. No valves are stuck open as far as I can see. I went round and manually pushed each valve with the end of my pry bar and all compressed slightly except for one on cylinder 3. Not sure if that indicates much. Looking at the rockers in front of you, the far left spring/valve won't compress at all and dizzy is almost pointing at cylinder 1.
Ok so I thought I would turn it in reverse to see if it makes a difference. The dizzy gets a third of the way back round and then it jams again. Pic of dizzy at second jam point
I got it to turn freely. Then started to set tappets but when I got to 3 it got stuck again. I give up. Rebuild.
Not rebuild. Engine out take head off and look. Take out gonk or small screw left by PO in the inlet manifold now embedded in cylinder head. Decide that as its a Type 4 and its only dents in the metal really put it back together....
If its turning freely without the tappets attached but going tight when trying to set the gap there is something amiss between the pushrod and valve. Sounds like pushrod isnt seating correctly causing a the valve to remain open and then piston and valve are contacting. remove the rocker gear completely and start afresh.
Or valve refusing to open and jamming. 99.9% sure that pistons can't hit valves even fully open with a high lift cam.
or indeed a valve not opening in the first place... dont think it would have run at all without snapping/bending something
For some reason since tapatalk has updated thus forum doesn't send me notifications. I will go turn them on.
I was laying on the concrete floor in the workshop in dispair waiting for some support but the notifications didn't update. Lol. Poor me.
Hi mate. Just spent Saturday investigating. If I had the knowledge I would have been under the van for about an hour rather than 5. Lol. Anyway I now have to take rockers off and see if it turns past cylinder 1 and 3 where it is stuck at the moment. If so then I guess it will eliminate an area of the engine where there isn't a problem. Zedders has a hunch that a piece of car has broken off and fell in the engine, hopefully this is the case so it isn't a full split. I might drop the oil out and check for debris later too. It's probably going to be engine out jobby whatever the result.
Ok @zedders @davidoft the rockers are off and it turns but I can still feel some binding every now and then. It did stop once too. Basically I rotated it counter clockwise at first it was fine, then clockwise it jammed again in 1st cylinder position. I am going to start getting it ready to come out. Just about to take strainer out and see what it yields
