    Yes I am going with retro-propex(hot water bottles)too and stocking up on those gel glove inserts where you boil them up and then press a button later to release heat. Hitech stuff. :baggy:

    There is a strong possibility I'm not going to make it :(
    Decided to give the van a run into work this morning to check all was okay - it has been starting alright on the driveway and idling as well as ever, but stopping after about 5 minutes. Thought the run might do it good and if I could get to techenders, maybe a kind bod could shed some light.
    It's jolty, misfiring, mostly only firing on 2 and 4 (less that that occasionally I think), no acceleration, and just never in a million years going to make it 140 miles to lutterworth. Starts and stalls. Starts, runs a bit and stops. I'm gutted.
    I think my only alternative is to join the AA today, and then on Friday coax it a few miles away from home, and then call the AA to relay me to Leicestershire in the hope you kindly lot can help!

    Where are u maybe one of us to help before to get u there and I can bring a load of t1 engine spares as I have a beetle engine in bits I'm not gonna be using in a hurry so ur welcome to lend some till u get it sorted

    Sounds like a problem with a part stuck on the engine at any rate, not the actual mechanical engine, so absolutely fixable.

    Right decided to do the the valve clearances today (wanted to do it at techenders but it's up on ramps and I'm sure with the help of you tube and Haynes I can do it )as the amount of oil I'm losing from the cover I might run out before I get to techenders!
    I've got a new cork gasket and I hope it's not one of the carp ones ! What shall I put on it if anything, grease or hylomar?

    no put it on dry, you could use a small blob of grease in each corner to help temporarliy hold it in place when refitting the cover. gasket onto cover first
