One disappointment with the double CHT gauge - there is no back lighting. There is a small hole with a bung in it though. I've removed this for a look in case it was to access an adjusting screw or the like, but there's nothing in the hole so I'm assuming it's to poke a bulb though and I'll get around to trying it eventually.
Been for a wee trip into town for supplies and to see how the gauge works now. According to the gauge it runs around at about 175C = 350F. This will go way up if I thrash it I'm sure. What's too hot? I'm still tinkering with the rear wheel tracking too, going on my gauges and the results of the computer atempts. Having previously adjusted the o/side in a bit I pointed the n/side one out a little yesterday. I would say it's a little less twitchy now but the toe in is approx 0 degs. After the o/s adjustment above I had equal measurements from my straightedge against the rear tyre to the chassis just behind the front jacking points. After the n/s adjustment it'll be out a bit so probably needs the o/s moving back a bit (more toe out) to match. This is all a bit crude but hey-ho. If this rear wheel messing about results in a bus that's no longer as twitchy, I'll have learned something at least.
There seems to be quite a variety of views, basically on The Samba about CHT readings. After spending ages reading them it all seemed to boil down (if you'll excuse a water-cooled pun) to start worrying if it went much above 400F and really start above 425F. My type 1 runs about 350F or so in warm weather.
My 2.0 normally runs at about 350F (VDO gauge and I only measure No. 3) on the flat but easily gets to 400F pushing on a bit and 450F climbing cols – and there’s lots of ‘em round here. Oil temp up to 130C – that’s measured at the relief valve but I’m not convinced it’s accurate and ignore it.
My oil temp is in F, sender in sandwich plate that has a short loop of pipe on it and sits at about 220F (105C) up to about 60mph. It gets up to about 240F (115C) at 70 on the flat or 60-65 up and down hills. It is winter though so I'll be fitting a cooler.
I wonder the truth of it all TBH, if I didn't have gauges I'd say mine runs cool. I haven't given it a good test for the CHT yet but anyway who knows how accurate or comparable everyone's gauges are?
ours reads exacly as 77 Westys. Usually around 350 plus or minus. You can watch it climb quite quickly in high ambient under load but it is instant so driving can be modified. It's only ever an indication but one I personally wouldn't be without on the T4. btw having the join of the thermo coupling wires to extension cable outside the engine bay gives a more consistent reading IMO
I figured that too and have done the same. Though THB with almost a cubic metre of fresh air air per second travelling through the engine bay I doubt it really matters unless you're crawling along.
When @Paul Weeding fitted my external oil cooler, the normal running oil temperature dropped from over 100 C to less than 90 C.
Time for one last spending spree. The foam I got is useless and getting binned. Far too soft, what a waste of money that was. This time I'm going in person to a foam shop who will cut it then and there. I have 8 lovely bright interior lights. I cocked up and thought I'd ordered touch ones but hadn't so they are either all on or all off. This is great when I want bright light, but it'll be heavy on the battery despite them being LED and I don't always want it bright throughout the bus. More money down the pan - 8 touch on/off lights ordered. I want a small cheap whistling kettle with a folding handle. I'd like silver or green coloured and can only find red or blue ones. I will need a phone charging socket - what should I get for a smartphone? Solar - won't work at this time of year, but I have workshop still and think I'll need to fit my uprated poptop springs. I got stumped trying to get more than 100w flexi without getting stung for 2 smaller panels. I think I may have to put up with 100W. Panel ordered. I need a new outboard cooler, I mullered the threads on mine. I might just go for a bigger one than usual.

Facts of life: tasks fill the time available stuff fills the space available the more money you have the more you spend!
Amen to that. Tomorrow sees me wresting with the upper control arm bushes on Big G. Eccentric washers to adjust camber/pack the bushes and a new bolt on order in an attempt to make the job easier... ...but grovelling around in the wet marina car park with the usual steady stream of experts with nothing better to do than offer less than useless information is not my idea of fun!
