clean up the old discs and fit the new pads...they'll wear in in about twenty miles of normal use. Best 'upgrade' would be Aeroquip hoses all round, and fresh fluid... ideally, the caliper pistons need to be flawless...any chunks or scores will chew the seals
I bought a full front kit discs and pads, and a full rear kit cylinders, shoes, fitting kit, drums etc. All based on the 'mechanic's' advice. Maybe I should check the whole lot for myself before I open any boxes.. .
and check the drums. Somebody wrapped my new drums in bubble wrap and then dropped one of them them on the only bit poking through the wrap. So I got a brake drum and a flake of cast iron from JK. But they let me return it.
@lost-en-france how do I remove the piston? I clamped one side, pressed the brakes and the other piston moved a bit but stopped. Couldn't pump the brakes up much. Can't get the piston to move in or out.
That's it, pump more. If you can squeeze in a bit of thin ply to stop it hitting the clamp when it shoots out like a bullet that's good.
Just realised the other side had no pads in either. Maybe I have done it wrong. should I have had the other side pads left in or clamped when I did this?
The brake is your friend pumping out the piston ,I doubt if you other one popped out because the disc would have stopped them ,is the back brakes still in the hub?... If it has popped out start on the otherside first....
Anyone know a cheap place to get piston dust seals from? 20 quid a pair most places. Might end up using one off the old set of calipers I have in the garage. Ripped one yesterday didn't I. Doh. But I did get one piston out, Freed up and moving. Going to do the rest this morning now.
Think I have just answered my own question haven't I @lost-en-france and @zed . Also any tips on how to replace the seals? Sorry to bug you both, but it's your own faults for being so experienced and full of knowledge.
What about buying from here, not sure exactly which callipers you have but for less than £15 whilst you've gone to the trouble to get the pistons out it makes sense to replace. http://brakeparts.co.uk/#!/shop/VW/... - Brake Calipers and Wheel cylinders/BCK5411
There are two kinds - early with the seperate spring clip and later with a built in metal band. Fitting them is too obvious so what are you asking?
You did say 20 quid a pair, sorry I thought that was for a pair of pistons (not pair of callipers) ... so even cheaper than my suggestion.
Well everything I do fwarks up in some way or another so I just want to know that if I rip the old seal off, if that's the right way to do it or am i going to bugger it like i normally do. Also can I do it with piston in or does it have to be out?
