So when the fella dropped the bay back after its windscreen repair etc, he said brakes were metal on metal. And he said the discs were too pitted to just replace pads as they would just get eaten.

I have taken the pads out and wheels off and I think he is wrong.

Anyone care to agree or disagree? I know a photo doesn't really show everything, but these are not really pitted. If they are it is very light. I'm glad I took the pads out as I have a suspicion the pistons are seized. I can't remember how to tell this or.not does anyone fancy explaining again? @lost-en-france

Yes he was talking *****, I expect he was wearing the rust off the discs and didn't like the noise. You should hear mine just pushing it about after 5 years, not using the brakes, but I've looked and the the discs are fine. :).

  7. Clamp one piston ,push the brake and pop the other one out...You will see a rusty ring in the caliper ,clean that with fine emery cloth ,try to push the piston (after cleaned)back in ,do not force it ,if it is not going in nice ,take it back out and clean better....;)

You should be able to push both in with ease...

My Golf passed on a notoriously fussy brake testing machine with no pad material at all on the rear brakes.

its a shame i didnt check first because i have just ordered new pads and discs for the front. And i ordered a rear overhaul kit as he said they were shot too. Hopefully i wont be wasting my money. . .

  14. better if you undo the two bolts and have it hanging...

try and catch the brake fluid and filter it through a sock...

So should I replace the discs with new and have an all new set up or just do pads and keep old discs on?

  19. discs and pads are fine ,spend you money on new brake lines/flexis/rear cylinders...

Me and my mate could service a brake system in two hours ,he would clamp the rear flexis and put new cylinders (defo) and shoes (if needed) ,I would pop the front calipers and service ,them we would replace all the lines etc...

  20. There is another recent thread on here about brake judder. The chap with the MG warned about the quality of new disks.

Is it better to make the best of what you have or buy new cheap repro?
