Yet another distributor thread!

  1. Hi

    When i got my bay (2.0 Type 4, twin webber 40's, Webcam 73 grind) some years back, it ran terribly. The engine had only done 5000 miles and the previous owner had grown to hate the bus after spending a fortune on rolling road sessions with no success. The fault was quickly diagnosed by Harry Harpics as a faulty vacuum on the distributor. I had a spare genuine 009, points and coil in my emergency bag so that was stuck on and its been like that ever since. I recently found the original distributor and a spare working vacuum can in my garage when having a clear out and thought it may be better to return to the dizzy that was designed for a bus rather than my 009. The dizzy is a vw 043 905 205 C (bosch 0231 176 028). When i have tried to look it up, i have found only a couple of references for it, one saying it is for a 1800 type 4 bus engine and another for a 1600 super beetle??? The original vacuum can has 2957 on the arm and the spare, which is the same shape, has 953 on the arm. Question is, will this combo work on my engine or am i wasting my time with this dizzy?

  4. It was all i had at the time simon and it worked. Still does, but its not correct.

  7. Speaking from experience it'll be far better than your 009, that's for sure
    I persevered with a 009 for years, it ran well apart from the flat spot just above tickover but i didn't realise how bad it was until I tried a cheapo accuspark SVDA.

    I'm looking for a decent Bosch to refurb before the Chinese one explodes but it's serving a purpose...

  9. I am interested in this, my Bus came with twin carbs and an 009, I can't feel a flat spot and, I think, it runs fine, but I haven't tried an SVDA or the fancy electronic one that everyone rates.

  10. Mine also has a 009 & twin carbs, seems fine to me, but never tried anything else to see if it makes any difference.

    More revs and clutch slipping for non-vac when pulling away from a stop. Potentential for more mpg with the extra advance from vac giving the time for a leaner idle jet mixture to burn.

  12. If it ain`t broke .... :thumbsup:

    I think it`s more noticable with the single carb . I played around with various settings on the solex and got it better with the 009 but it made a big difference when i popped in a cheapo SVDA :D

  13. That's what I heard too, single carbs and 009's are not ideal. I have a spare dizzy to get timed up at TE and the Bug also uses an 009 so sticking with 009s works for me, I always have a spare.

    Correct. The stock carb is jetted for the svda, it more than likely has too lean idles for mech only. Lean cruise tuning is a no no for mech only. It also needs more timing to burn the rich petrol squirt as you set off so the squirt is probably less thsn ideal too.

    I will bring a spare SVDA distributor to TE, if people want to try one .

    One problem can be that the too-big venturis/throttle plates on optimistic carburettors produce less vacuum signal as the manifold pressure collapses as soon as you come off idle.

    As I noted in stupid calculations - the progressive carburettor in some ways is a much closer match for a 2332 than many other bigger carburettors. Not surprising as according to the Weber book, with one combination of jets and venturis, it came off a Ford Granada 2.8L .. Which was a huge car that would cruise at 100 and go round motorway roundabouts slowing down to 70... as once demonstrated by a work colleague who was a rally driver as a hobby.

    The venturis have no effect on the manifold vacuum but bigger do delay the mains compared to smaller. There's always a happy point which is as Mike says smaller than most people like to think. That jump from 28mm to 30 doesn't help a bus and the gain at the top end is undetectable. Stock twin solexs were 26mm vents in 34mm carbs so 28mm is already a big jump.

  18. An update guys, popped down to Harry Harpics for a tune up and swapped out the 009 for the svda and yes, it is night and day. Smoother, Much better at take off, whereas the 009 was great when the revs are up. Doing a long run tomorrow so will see how it affects the mpg. I also popped into Advanced Fluid Solutions and bought bio hose to replace my year old R9 and some new breather hose. So glad I did as the r9 was badly cracked.

  19. Turns out it was entirely down to the vacuum can!
