I know, I know… should I have them in the fan housing, or not? Most people say yes, but I’m just asking wether anyone on here, has had the thermostat fail, or the flaps stay shut and then cooked their engine? Just asking, because as I’ve had my 1600tp heads off, I couldn’t help noticing the state of the connecting rod, where I guess it’s been rubbing on the ‘rough’ castings of the head. It’s actually had a chunk worn out of it, so Infiled all the rough cast out. Hopefully, it should be ok. Anyone seen this, when doing head work?
Just check they open and close happily before you fit the thermostat and you'll be golden. Simple engine. Simple needs. Why bother messing with the original design.
It may or may not have jammed once when it was quite bent and wasn't going through the hole cleanly. The fact the oil temperature went over 130C was a sign that something was wrong so I stopped and without touching anything the temperature dropped back to less than the usual 122C so I carried on. (Usually it's because I left the anti rain air vent covers on) Because of the fact it was fairly chewed up and the thread wore off the end of the rod, and in the top of the thermostat, it is now a piece of 4mm fencing wire with a threaded end put on with a die. And the thermostat got the knackered thread chopped off and a bit of M4 tapped brass hex bar (circuit board standoff) soldered onto it.. since then I scored a NOS thermostat for £28.
If you've got the option to have them, do it. A thermostat can't be a bad thing to have. (My engine has had the thermostat mounting post sawn off, so not possible for me until I get the case split and a new one 'safely' drilled in - but I'd have one for sure it were an option)
In your first sentence It is worth cleaning the flash out of the rod 'ole. They should work fine after that.
Really, it’s more a question about the rough casting, in the air gap, in the heads. Mine was almost blocked, before I put a file down inside there and smoothed them down a bit. I’m just trying to point out the fact ,that the rod could possibly jam in there, because of the casting, going on the state of mine..
I read it as an appeal for someone to say "don't fit them, they'll cook your engine". Why ask otherwise?
I think I can agree , yes rough flash covered 040 stock head castings cast by Autolinea coming in VW branded boxes caused trouble ten years ago. At the time the exact same heads in an Autolinea box were 5% cheaper.. Cleaner new Autolinea manufactured EMPI 040 castings last year, no trouble.
Thanks. That’s also what I’m trying to get at. Maybe it could also be a warning to the people that use the flaps, but havnt cleaned out all the rough cast yet, too. But I am still asking, “ has anyone actually cooked an engine, because the flap mechanism has failed somehow?”.You only have to look at my connecting rod to see that it was obviously fouling.
Not really as you're the only fool on here I've felt the need to hit the ignore button for , although I do occasionally dip in to see what attention seeking tosh you've come out with this week ... You definitely need to get out more . Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
