Typically they have one half the price of anywhere else, would you take that risk? Looking for a basic one for our son's birthday - if anyone has any recommendations of a sensible priced one thats not to fancy that would be greatfully received as well

Depends on the manufacturer, if its a who flung dung make might be hard to send back direct. But then if its half price then its worth the chance.
What Marowak said, most in store warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on. If it is the right price go for it.
