A lot more i guess with 20 bids already and 4hrs togo

  2. In truth it would be easier to get a couple of installers in to get an idea of price and what can and cant be done. At least then you will have an idea of what materials you would need to buy even if you have to do it yourself.
If you already have say a chimney flue its great because you can drop down a new liner down, suspend it off the top off the pot with a suspending cowl, connect at bottom, install a register plate, bingo bango.

However technically speaking even just for this youd need a building regs application. Time you add that and materials and say £100 for someone brave to go up on the roof to drop it down you are still talking with a cheap woodburner off ebay about £800-£1000. If you are talking twin wall flue outside then you are talking £2-3K upwards still with a cheap woodburner and then also the cost of getting planning permission.

Although long term its worth it what with the price of fuel its a big investment with payback being quite a while.
However all that aside its lovely in winter watching the fire crackle away.

cheers guys it seems it's not gonna be cheap eitherway, i'll ask at the local fire shop, they are still in business and fitted my current gas fire 15+ years ago.

  4. if it were me i would run the new flue up the inside of the house and try and position the wood burner in the middle of the house

there is still quite a bit of heat given off from the flue and you might as well use this to help heat the rooms up stairs

  5. clearview stoves are really worth the cash ,I agree with bungle ,my mk1 woodburner [well pizza oven] was vented on a outside wall ,we missed out on all the heat the chimney produced ,mk2 was a better woodburner but still with outside flue ,m3 I built a chimney in the center of the house and we are toasty.... ;D

  6. the 1 wood burner in the centre of our house heats 4 rooms and 2 wardrobes

you can't beat clean warm pants in the morning

  7. You have to either get a Hetas installer to do the work & commission it or do it yourself and pay the building inspector to come round and inspect the work after you install, you would have to apply for building regs (document J &. (£250)
http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/stove_building_regulations.html has lots of information about the topic. If you don't then your buildings insurance will not be valid. - You could have issues when selling the house if you don't do this, you would have to get lack of building consent insurance.

I installed the 6" single lined flue up my existing chimney myself and then got a Hetas installer to do the stove, connection and register plate and registered the install with Hetas competent person scheme so no building reg required, they charged £350.

One thing that is important to consider is that you should have 300mm or 450mm (can't remember) of hearth infront of the wood burner as part of the regs and that may impact on your living space.

    My Cost:
    Installer £350
    Flue bits £250
Stove (mine was given to me)
Building materials (plaster, brick slate etc) £200

  17. Oooo I'm off to France in a few weeks and we've got a log burner in the gite, been out and bought my logs all ready, keeping nice and dry in the garage.
I know it's sad but it's the one time of the year where I can be Neanderthal man.

  19. Wouldn't it be quicker, easier, cheaper and annoy the neighbours less if you just got the gas fire repaired/replaced?
