  1. put new engine in last week had it running sweet on bench with garage carb on , fit in van with my carb wont idle ,bought another carb wont idle .refurb kit on old carb today wont idle , sucking air in somewhere ,the bus has always had fuel breather pipe connected to small outlet on manifold which i know isnt right but if its connected to air filter as per norm it wont run at all .servo pipe is blanked off at mo . no air leaks as manifold and all gaskets new . i ran it to santa pod at weekend the way it was set up before and it just ticks over too fast cant slow it down can the airfilter cause probs as its the only thing i not changed ,had my head in engine bay for three days trying to sort this bloody thing out anyone any ideas ta

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Post some pics of how you have it plumbed - what you describe with the petrol tank breather doesn't make sense.

  3. Its pulling air in somwhere

Ran fine with garage carb but has too tick over so high to get it to idle sounds like carb spindle bushes to me

I nearly had a mental breakdown over a month with carb issues

Dare i say it i bought an empi pict copy from coolair and its been ok so far even if the mechanical parts are made from monkey metal

Ive rebuilt cleaned using various methods and rebushed a few standard carbs and non of them where perfect afterwards

Id say if you were to get a standard pict carb refurbed well
It would need ultrasonic cleaning and new spindle and bushes fitted

Im in no doubt that this empi carb wont last as long as a genuine original pict but the saving in fuel over a knackerd carb makes economical sense to me

  4. do you have a vacuum advance dizzy and where is that connected, do you have any connections to the air valve on the air filter?

  5. Is this a yank 1600 bus? Im guessing that - you have the breather connected to the retard connection for a dual can dissy (or does this operate the fresh air flap) and that you dont have an idle setting on your carb. The breather should go to your air-box I believe and to get an idle on this without just trying to draw it in through the manifold you will need to blank this off (on the manifold that is) with a short length of vaccuum pipe with a screw in the end (as a temp) then adjust the carb. I dont know how type 1 motors fuel thenselves at idle but you can cheat by setting the throttle plate to provide tickover till someone comes along and tells you how to set it properly.

  6. ^^^^^ what he said^^^^^^

Sounds like too much air. If you can get hold of a test air flow sensor would be an idea. Is the carb set up as good as it should be. Might have got a knock when reinstallelled.

Just a gues but air leak is somewhere.

    Good luck with it
