wiring in spotlight(s)

  1. Hi all,

Just about to fit a spotlamp (or possibly a apair, depending on just how 1 looks on its own) and just wondering how to wire it (them?) in?

Do I need a relay or can I take the feed for the spotlamp straight off the main beam live wire (wanted them off the main beam).

If I need a relay, is there a specific one I need?

    Many thanks,

  2. All i know is that you will need a relay, maybe have a look at "vehicle wiring products" website, they list relays and there uses

using high beam to switch you could take the wire from the white wire on the back of the fuse box

    or fit a separate switch

  4. Thanks Matty- do you mean take the wire directly from the spotlights to the white wire from the fuse box, or do you mean still use a relay.

I remember in the old days, I used to take a feed for the spots directly from the main beam feed wire just using a scotchlock - yes, I know everyone hates scotchlocks, but they always worked for me!

    thanks

  5. You need a relay. It's ancient wiring so it's essential

  6. What's the rating of the existing main beam relay? 30/40Amp? Should be fine piggybacking a wire from the relay to the spotlights

  7. I would always use a relay when adding electrical item to and vehicle - this takes the "strain" off the original circuit and this will only be used as a low amp trigger for the relay, the main power being drawn from the battery.
Older circuits were only designed to have, in this case, the headlight amperage drawn not headlights and spotlights - hence doubling the amps.

  8. thanks guys - when i pulled the kick panel off to put the wire through from the spotlamp, I noticed there was already a relay there with all the wires cut off - result! PO must have have spotlamps fitted at one point in time.

I can now wire to this with the aid of matty's wiring diagram.
