Wiring in a new Radio

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Disco_kegs, Jul 21, 2012.

  1. Here is a pic of the back of my zig unit. It has an aux switch which is connected to my leisure battery and i want to wire my new stereo to it so it can listen to it when stopped. Question is where do i wire it to and what type of wire/s do i need to use from here to the generic stereo connector socket thing?

  2. Take that white cover off so we can see the back of the zig mate.

Above your white thing is a leisure 12v fusebox already populated (as we say) with blade fuses. A feed wire from the white thing suplies the box with 12v. Wire it into here and check your stereo bumph for fuse size. I used 10A.

On the connector - you should have a plug (2 plugs) with tails to plug into the sockets dangling off the stereo. They are standard colours - google it. :)

  4. Radio wiring colours are not all standardised. They can vary between models by the same manufacturer! make sure you get the right diagram for your model.

  6. Not used a zig before but if it's standard wiring then you just run a positive wire from blade fuse to the stereo and then run a negative wire to anywhere close to earth it. Mine goes to the multi earth screw on the headlight.

  7. Once you've decided what wires are what off the radio then wire them to the back of he zig unit. On the zig unit there is a strip of connectors numbered 1-12. ALL ODD numbers are -(negative) and All EVEN are + (positive). The 12v outputs from the zig are connectors 5-10 (in pairs). Most car radios don't pull too much current, but some of the high power amps do! It's the old volts amps watts calculation. Greater the wattage greater the amps which in turn requires greater thickness of cable to deliver the voltage. But at a guess 5amp cable should do. Quick check. Are the factory fitted cables going into radio thinner than the ones you're going to connect and extend to the zig? Then you'll be ok.
