Wiring an electrical fuel pump safely

  1. I used to have mine on with the ignition, and had no problems. However, it always annoyed me that the pump was ticking with just the ignition on and no engine running (i know your not supposed to leave the ignition on, burnt out points blah, blah blah. but even for a few seconds it annoyed me) so i put the fused fuel pump relay in and its a neat soloution to make a proper job. The main reason having no relay is considered a bodge is purely that IF you have an accident the fuel pump keeps pumping if the engine stalls. Its all ifs and maybe's but then so are so many things to do with safety.

Is that from this thread Craigy? :) http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=448416&highlight=electric+fuel+pump+wiring+diagram

  5. Useful to have the bypass if you run out of petrol too.
I've run out of petrol, got a taxi to get petrol, flattened the battery trying to start it, taxi to take battery home to charge, taxi to get charged battery back all because I had a mechanical pump (oh yeah and i ran out of petrol because of that stupid voltage regulator!)
    Cheers
