Wire thickness for LED lights?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Feb 27, 2014.

  1. I'm in the process of fitting the interior lights and i'm not to sure what thickness of wire to use. I think I just need 1mm but would like some advise from someone with experience. The lights I am fitting can be found below and the distance to the zig unit is around 1000-1200mm. Cheers in advance guys and girls

If you look at the power consumption each lamp is less than ΒΌ amp so 1mm cable would be fine - unless you are fitting dozens of lights.

  3. If you're fitting just one, then 1mm2 will be fine. Don't use anything much thicker as it will be unwieldy to run and terminate at the ends. You could get away with 0.5mm2 or 0.75mm2.
VW used 0.5mm2 for the interior lights, which are 10 Watts. Depending which one you bought, your LED fitting is either 2.2W or 4.4W.

    EDIT:
PS - Let us know how it looks. I considered this LED fitting for our van, but couldn't work out whether it has warm white or cold white LEDs. I personally don't like cold white, so found a alternative warm white LED fitting. I'll find the link if you're interested.

  4. I'm looking at LED light options so would be interested if you could find the link. Thanks

  5. I will let you know once there fitted how they look. They should be awesome

  6. Worth trying to find the warm white LEDs. I changed the cab and interior festoon bulbs for LEDs, but the cold ones were horrible!

1mm2 should be fine for LEDs, BTW.

  7. I'd go for 1mm for mechanical strength,

  8. i used 21amp 1.5mm 16 awg 12v auto cable for my LEDs - Connected from the leisure battery fuse board via an isolator switch to my Ikea strip LEDs - about 3 meters of cable by the time it had been routed - job done
