Wipers staying on after switched off

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sick Boy, Aug 16, 2021.

  1. Driving through the Snowdonia rain last week I found that my wipers stopped some time after I had switched them off, and then parked in a different position. Is this something an electrical know-nothing can fix?

  2. Is it possible water getting into the electrics, or motor area?

  3. Sounds like the park switch in the wiper gearbox needs a good cleaning.

If you have magically made them work better by using vast amounts of rain water as lubrication, the wipers can go fast enough to over-run the stop switch position if the the motor parking shorting contact is not making connection or is not connected. So the fault could be latent, and exposed by the wipers actually moving fast for a change.

Basically when you switch the wipers to stop, the power is connected through the wiper parking switch, so that up until the point where they should be parked the motor runs. Then the park switch disconnects power and shorts out the motor to stop it. If that shorting doesnt happen, it can run on until it picks up again on the part of the switch where the power is still applied , and round it goes again, forever trying to stop until the screen dries out, the wiper blades slow down and it finally manages to run on to a stop where it should be in the shorting position.

The quickest stopping is when its shorted - thats the correct park position. The run on until friction wins means that the wipers end up stopped a bit away from the park position.

  5. Thanks - from the replies I will clean up the connections and reading @mikedjames I can then just live with it if it continues. ( Which is what I always like to hear). Many thanks again.
