Wipers blowing fuses

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Paul Hill, Jan 28, 2015.

  1. It's me again......callie keeps blowing fuses when I switch on the wipers to intermittent, I've gone thru about 20 fuses!! Any idea what could be causing this?? The wipers work fine on full it just seemed to be intermittent......thanks in advance!!!

Wasn't aware there was an intermittent , is it aftermarket ?

  4. Sure you've got an intermittent setting. It's not slow speed that's blowing, is it?

  5. There's an intermittent setting on my 79. Don't know what might make it blow but suspect it's in the wiring or switch rather than the internals of the motor.

Must be a live hitting an earth making it blow

  7. I tried another switch and it still blows the fuse! Could it be a problem with a relay or is there not one!! Is it just a case of following the wiring back til I find an obvious problem??

  8. How long have you had the van? is this the first time you've used the wipers? I had fuses blowing on low speed wipers, I thought the motor had had it, but on fitting the new motor turned out the PO had labelled up the wires incorrectly!

I'm no expert but when I looked into my fault I read something along the lines that the motor might be on the way out, drawing too much power and blowing the fuse.

I had a similar problem with Rhubarb. I did increase the fuse and it stopped.

    so starting from scratch

Do any of the wiper functions work 1 speed, 2 speed, park
    Did they use to work
Have you done any work in the dash area or fuse box lately
    Is the van stored outside
How do you switch the intermittent mode on
Does it have 3 relays in the fuse box

wasn't lucas, my 1st mrs was a farmers daughter, her dad taught me all the easy fixes i know.

  16. I would try following the wiring that controls the intermittent setting, check all connections, sounds like something is shorting somewhere along the line.

25 amps plus is a dead short into a bad earth connection. Track it down and fix it as it will be burning out contacts or one day bits of wire around the wipers... actually thinking about it check you have not got frayed or already melted wires ...
Like where the windscreen wiper mech saws through the insulation as the wires havent been clipped out of the way. Had this around handbrake lever and same frayed insulation thing fried an ECU on a Zafira I had.

  18. I've had the whole system to pieces yesterday and could find no obvious problem!! I've now got the wiper motor up and just the switch wired in. The switch on its own doesn't blow the fuse, when the switch is in the off position I have live both sides of the switch is this right?? When I turn the switch round I get live in what seems like all the right places, I've ordered a second hand motor on eBay so hopefully that'll sort it.....

find which relay in the fuse box is the wiper one, if you have a screen leak they fill up with water and can cause a dead short

  20. Or only confuse matters further!
I would try and establish for certain if there is a problem with the motor itself before spending out on another one.
Remove it and bench test it, very easy to do.
