Winnie the poo - our new van has arrived.......

  1. A nice thought, there's something really heart warming about bringing a dead vehicle back to life...Winnie should be back on the road for a good few years and if she could talk I hope she's grateful!!! Thinking about it, she might have liked her early retirement and therefore is rather pee'd off at being made to go back to work?!

  2. Glad you made it - what a race against time! So, are you going to do another one next week then? ;)

  3. Erm, no, I'm going to leave it for a few weeks :)

  4. Ooo - by the way, are you still after the gas tank, I have decided to go down the route of a Camping Gaz setup :)

  5. Mmm, yes - have you had it working at all?

  6. Still has gas in it so yes, it worked!

  7. PM me, I'm interested! :)

  8. Starting to get very concerned about DVLA - phoned on Monday and was told everything would be fine but it wasn't possible to do a progress report because it must be 10 working days :(

  9. Well done! It was like an episode of Challenge Anneka!

  10. Will do sir, can't seem to PM on my iPhone so will when I get into work!

  11. Well, here goes.
DVLA have sent a letter back saying they are unable to process my application..... :(

Apparently there is a problem with my Nova registration. As this is a vehicle of historic interest, so I'm told (?) it is currently exempt from the new Nova rules, so my shipper tells me. I now need to contact HMRC to discuss my vehicle registration??

All this has come into effect in the last two weeks, these guys don't want to help at all and I really don't think i'm going to make my holiday.... I have a good motor trade contact in Swansea, I think I'll give him a call!

i have no idea what a "nova" is, but as i registered the same van as you i can't see what's changed? the historic interest part was only claimed by me to get the lower import tax at 5% all i needed was the caifornia title, the c&e 386 form and a registration application i drove to my local office handed over the details and some cash and collected the reg a few days later, there are still many importers doing it so i reckon you've just hit the introduction of a new system blues where the employees who don't like change have got one on them.

  13. Here's what's changed. As from the 15th April this year, the C&E386 is obsolete. It has been replaced by a new system NOVA ( which stands for Notification of Vehicle Arrivals ) and is an online system designed to stamp out tax evasion / fraud on importing vehicles. It means that all new arrivals from EU and Non EU countries must be registered on this database and no vehicle can be registered by the DVLA until this task is completed. My issue is that the shipping company I used think that my bus is exempt from NOVA due to "historic" status, however I have discovered that as from the first of July, all vehicle imports have to be registered on this system, regardless.
So I now have a number to call and this will get sorted, but not in time for our trip to France :(

I can't see why it'd be exempt because of its historic status, its still a vehicle that's arrived in the UK.
Can't you just run it on the yank plates to France?

  15. Never had any US plates.... This van had no title...

  16. Feel for you fella. Hope it gets sorted.

yeah man im not using mine until august now lol, or have my cali plates.

  19. Very tempting....:)

  20. Right..... I'm now going to have a rant. What is so bl@@*y difficult that DVLA and HMRC can't talk to each other and neither computer talks to the other???
How can it be that you have to trust not one but two government departments to make something as simple as registering an imported vehicle within a perfectly reasonable time period of 3 to 4 weeks.
DVLA returned my application because I'm not registered on NOVA, they gave me a number to call, which was helpful... Except it was the wrong number. When the number was finally answered a very curt answer phone message informed me that I had couldn't leave a message. After three further calls each time engaged I finally got through to a real person in England!! Real person informed me they were very sorry but I needed to call another number. This number was the "national duty hub" and I called this getting a really very nice gent on the line who really fell over backwards to help.....except I didn't gave the right paperwork. So, as this was Friday at 5 pm I decided to try again Monday morning....
So , I call the "national duty hub" number and get a lovely and very helpful lady who tells me my listing on Nova can be sorted very quickly and provided the info my shipping agent should have sent is emailed across quickly it can be sorted today and a letter sent out! Brilliant, so this is duly done and sent....
Then I decide to call DVLA to see if I can bring the paperwork in - after about 30 options I get hold of a nice young gentleman who tells me that's not possible and it will take up to 10 days to process.... Ok, so we might just make it!!
Call the "national duty hub" and get a different person. So, I say, have you received my email? - Yes, says different person - Great, I say, I wonder if you might be able to send the letter confirming NOVA to me as soon as possible because I'm hoping to go away at the end of next week...... Different person - No, that won't be possible, it won't be with you until next Monday at the earliest as there are a lot of people in front of you.....
Reading between the lines that says " no chance mate, and just because I can I'm going to bury your application at the bottom of the pile because I can.... Argghhhhh
No, I'm not against officialdom and the civil service, but sometimes it would be nice if somebody could understand when somebody is genuinely in a bit of a hurry - even Banks can move money quickly now compared with days gone by - why oh why does this have to be so complicated.... :(
