Window winder mechanism issues and glass drop

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by markbutler47, Apr 18, 2013.

  1. Hi all,

anyone got any tips for my driver door window issue pls ?

The glass appears to have dropped off the rail inside, as when I wind the window up fully, the glass is still a few inches from closed.

I have took the door panel off and sprayed the mechanisms with WD40 but no difference.

    Any tips much appreciated.

    Cheers

  2. have the bolts come out of the bracket that holds the window to the mechanism?

.....or possibly the metal bracket on the bottom of the glass has rusted through?

if they all look good - have you replaced any bolts in the doors lately? ....when rebuilding mine I put some new bolts in that were slightly too long and they caught on the metal bracket on the bottom of the window stopping it going up fully

If you take off the door card and plastic liner it should be fairly evident what the problem is. If the winder is at the top position but the glass isn't, either:
    Lifter rusted through
    Bolts come out of lifter
    Lifter snapped (like mine did)
    Glass come out of lifter
    Window is too small ;-)

  4. many thanks Bay, it looks like its the glass thats out of the lifter.

any easy way of getting it back in ?

    sorry for the silly question

It should have a rubber that the glass sits in inside the lifter.
It's a tight fit (by design) and I couldn't get the bugger in!
Bought a new lifter which has a wider channel, fitted rubber and glass then clamped it up tighter.

  6. dampen the rubber when reinstalling. dont be tempted to use any grease or anything or it'll just slip out again. thelifter bars sold by VW herritage and the likes are a bit wide and need to be adjusted in a vice or hammer just to close the gap a little. should be fairly tight and knock it home with a rubber mallet. dont use a metal hammer.

  7. my moneys on a rusted runner. happened to be in my bug and as it rusts out it begins to open up, freeing the glass. I just bunged silicone in there and closed it up. It will do for the time being I suppose

  8. The runners are about £5.00 but dont come with the rubber bit so if your rubber is good save it and reuse. I did mine not so long ago.
