Why stock ? Okay so here's a thought on stock as i am a fan of the original look of our lovely old motors Some people add things to a standard late bay such as interiors , engines , wheels etc , they have their own well thought out reasons for doing so , sometime's it's power or comfort , sometime's it's reliability or economy , whatever it is it is usually very well thought out ( usually ) VW thought things out too believe it or not , they thought about handling comfort economy and power , they worked within their confine's of a under powered engine and limited understanding of safety testing at the time , with those things in mind they produced a superb iconic vehicle , it was reliable , comfortable , reasonably easy to handle and performed well for the day - result ! As we have now enjoyed 20+ years of better vehicle's we find driving a bay less responsive and might i say - a little more difficult , so we or some decide to upgrade to bigger and better , in essence we change our vans away from what VW produced , they become a different animal , not worse not even wrong but different , recently i had the pleasure of driving a scooby converted van and it was lovely - so no knocks from me , but - i like stock , i like the feel and look of a stock vw camper , i am lucky i have a pretty standard westy continental and to my mind it is just right , i equally like bog standard , Devon's , Danbury's and most other conversions and i always smile when i see a unmolested interior complete with a nice og van - wheels , engine , running gear etc , it say's - cherished by someone - imo My first van was a 71 Danbury i bought it in 78 and it was totally stock , it was better by a country mile than most other campers on the market at the time and petrol prices were not such a issue so we used it daily and for holidays - it was our life pre kids . So - stock vw campers are my thing man , i love the stuff people do to improve bays , i like the workmanship and pure deteremination to make their van work for them , but i really do smile when i see a nice og westy or Devon , - they just make me smile from ear to ear !
Yeah , it was very responsive and quick - probably quite a bit better on fuel too and the heating will be better - gawd , listen to me
it was from a legacy - it was Baybirminghams done by fellows in Birmingham - top job too , pm him and ask he is well pleased
im right there with you on the stock look, mines standard height and have been debating lowering him recently but in the back of my mind i keep hearing DONT DO IT! lol! I have Fuch rep wheels on it, and am debating going back to stock steels! Am I mad!?
I'm with you on the stock look - my bus will never be lowered or have alloy wheels on it. However you know my feelings on the engine bit - all I can say is Although one of the hangovers from my time with the VW watercooled lot is my interest in OEM+, adding stuff to the bus that was original equipment but not standard - overriders, mudflaps, poptop, US spec indicators, etc.
I love to see a fully original bay too also love looking at all the different modified ones too the good thing with a camper is people make them there own by putting a twist on things they are all individual if they where all the same as like many other vehicles on the road boring
I am a stock guy as well ,just a little lowering and alloys with a custom interior ,but the rest original......
Like your non bias prose there Poptop....most cool I like standard height, as I can get under her without jacks....if I need a bit more clearance, half of her goes on the kerb....and in the countryside I get to see over hedges
I like the idea of stock with some modern tweaks. I think alloys are fine 15' or so, nothing massive. Modern colours are cool too. My conversion is was available in green and orange so I changed to red. The interior colour is also quite rank so i've changed that to red too. Other modern updates would be a decent stereo and heating system. As for engine mods, i've never quite understood why people want more power. Buy a 2l version if that floats your boat. I like the fact that my van is slow, it helps you slow down you thoughts and chills you out a bit. Nothing better than a ***** in an audi over taking at some lightning speed only to be stuck behind a tractor round the next corner.
Mine will deffo be staying stock height, but eventually I will be putting in my own interior and a bigger, better engine. Will be staying aircooled though.
For me, I quite like the look of a slightly lowered bay, not too drastic but mild (enough to reduce the wheelarch gap slightly). When we bought Gusbus he was a bare, driveable shell (botched at that) & most of the interior parts had long gone, so he will be a custom bus to how I want him including sourcing a pair of the bullet indicators (a piller ones) from Italy, another item long robbed! Major on the other hand has the original interior with gasburner alloys, the westy curtains have gone as they was past there best but, when the time comes, I will refurbish the interior back to how it was when new! For me, I like all bays as they all have there own stamp & character to them!!
