  3. For me, social care - especially for oldies -is the big one. There's a tsunami of oldsters coming our way and with no discernible plan to deal with it/us all. It's been obvious for decades what's going to happen. And successive governments have not fixed the roof while the sun was shining. Unbelievable that it's got so bad with still no sane solution.
    Until now...
We all need a small extra tax, maybe not forever, but for a decade at least, to make sure some people aren't clobbered by dementia and lose everything to care home fees - and others pop off quickly and pass on everything. We all have a stake in sharing the risk. The point of a welfare state is its universality.
Also, means testing costs a fortune in admin. (Though, hmm, what if the tax kicked in at, say, 45?)
What we all need, too, is for social care and medical care to be merged seamlessly into one. It's a crazy system at the moment and no normal mortal can fathom out how it all works.
Nearest to sorting out this one are the Lib Dems, who are getting virtually no air time at all at the mo, far as I can see.
    See below.

Liberal Democrats will take five key steps in order to put our health and social care system back on a sustainable financial footing:
    1. An immediate 1p rise on the basic, higher and additional rates of Income Tax to raise £6 billion additional revenue which would be ringfenced to be spent only on NHS and social care services.
    2. Direct this additional investment to the following priority areas in the health and care system: social care, primary care (and other out-of-hospital care), mental health and public health. This represents the most efficient and effective way of spending these extra resources – ensuring they will have the greatest impact on the quality of care patients receive.
    3. In the longer term and as a replacement for the 1p Income Tax rise, commission the development of a dedicated Health and Care Tax on the basis of wide consultation, possibly based on a reform of National Insurance contributions, which will bring together spending on both services into a collective budget and sets out transparently, on people’s payslips, what we spend on them.
    4. Establish a cross-party health and social care convention, bringing together stakeholders from all political parties, patients groups, the public, and professionals from within the health and social care system to carry out a comprehensive review of the longer-term sustainability of the health and social care finances and workforce, and the practicalities of greater integration. We would invite the devolved administrations to be a part of this work.
    5. Introduce a statutory independent budget monitoring agency for health and care, similar to the Office for Budget Responsibility. This would report every three years on how much money the system needs to deliver safe and sustainable treatment and care, and how much is needed to meet the costs of projected increases in demand and any new initiatives – to ensure any changes in services are properly costed and affordable.
Our longer-term objective will be to bring together NHS and social care into one seamless service – pooling budgets in every area by 2020 and developing integrated care organisations.

Shocking. Another wooden top, do these numpties actually think about what they're going to say before they open their mouths? If/when her party wins the election she may be a Minister, dear God preserve us.

sorry it won,t work - the requirements for the nhs are infinite so no matter how much you pump in it will always want more .what is needed is greater efficiency ( not privatisation) believe me

NHS underfunded by 20% so far during this Government's tenure. My GP surgery is now owned by Spire, my local NHS Trust has just awarded a £65m contract to Virgin care, privatisation is well established now - and as we all know, the market is far more efficient than the public sector can ever be - its emphasis is profit therefore it is more efficient QED.

On a separate issue can someone who is voting Conservative please explain to me why you have made that choice?
It's a serious question as having read their Party's manifesto I am not a lot wiser about what exactly they will do in the next Government. It seems to be loaded with pretty general statements and isn't or doesn't appear to have much in the way of costings. One thing I did note is that they do want to scrap the triple lock of no Tax rises and whilst they have pledged not to raise VAT there are no such assurances for NI and Income Tax.

the nhs pays out more than 1.6 billion a year in compensation theres one big hole that wants sorting out for a start
every election we hear promises "won,t raise this won,t raise that " and they are continually broken every time . So maybe this time no promises are a good idea

It's what they don't say that's often the more interesting. 'We're having to raise NI because whatever and we didn't say we wouldn't in our manifesto' or some such double negative malarkey.

some figures - there are about 850000 people with dementia - now some have obviously have just the first signs how ever that can balanced out by other figure adjustments - the weekly cost of care in a care home is about £650 but that ain,t the home counties which will be more - ah you say the care homes will be making profit - well a lot are closing down because costs are too high
that gives a top figure of £ 25 billion a year ,thats a lot of tax

  20. He cant sack her just now can he....... she was a caretaker in my view and then May threw the election in. Masterly really but nonetheless the womans a liability. Either there's something mentally wrong with her or they lock her up in complete isolation! She has a good degree ffs. What the hell is wrong with her. Ive never liked the woman....ever!
