About to buy my first welder any recommendations on a decent Mig? Gas or Gasless? Something 240v, compact and idiot proof would be ideal cheers Tweed
A few words:- You'll never get a pro job with a home welder BUT you can get pretty close. Where are you going to use it? If you have a garage with a door then get a gas one, if you're working outside get the gasless (as well) option. What are you welding? Steel - No problem. Aluminium - Very difficult but not impossible. Anything else - Get a pro! Basic repairs on a Bus, get a Machine Mart (or similar, Sealey etc) get the biggest one you can afford with adjustable wire speed and amperage. Spend some money on a course at your local college, or get lots of scrap and practice a lot!
Remember you'll also need a GOOD grinder, wire brush, hammer selection, mask, gloves etc. The mask they come with is useless! Solar powered auto-on masks are mega cheap these days, get one!
Ive done welding before as an apprentice also work sent me on a course but i'd still say i'm a novice as far as speed and Amps are concerned. I need it for steel only Axle repairs and fitting panels, used in a garage Defiantly getting myself a good mask and gloves Been looking at a Sealey 150 gas/gasless cheers Tweed
i use to have a small home mig and was given a good one as payment for some work and i have never looked back the welds where so much better and easier So i would say get the biggest and most expensive you can afford
Some good advice on buying MIG's and technique for thin metal this site http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/index.php Mr B
I had a Sealey 150 turbo it was a good machine ,do not waste your time with gasless wire....... A welder with a euro torch is good...
I remember you advising to get one that you can stand the gas bottle on and also has wheels. Sound advice.
