Which starter motor !

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Geraint Thomas, May 1, 2017.

  1. hi all , I'm going to change the starter motor , but I'm a bit confused as too which one I need !!! Do I get the model suitable for the years 71-75 or 75-79 ? My bus is a 75 model , ap coded 1800 !! What about reconditioning the one I have ?

  2. recondition the one you have if you can. I bought a £100 one from heritage which lasted maybe 4 weeks. Ended up spending £2oo on proper Bosch reconditioned one which has been great. remember to fit a new bush too

Do a search, someone ran the Bosch part number and found the same units is used on outboard boat engines or something...but far far cheaper online than the ones priced for VW's.

I can't search well on my phone, but there's a thread here on this.

What’s wrong with the one you have?

  8. Nothing really! Just thought it would be a good idea to fit a new or reconditioned one whilst everything else is being looked at

A new one, even if it’s a Bosch in a Bosch box, is unlikely to be as good as the existing one – if it’s original. Either refurbish the old one or fit a geared motor such as a WOSP LMS 479 or Powerlite RAC423 - check those part numbers are correct before you purchase.

  10. Replaced my OG one on the Bus (1970) with one from GSF - worked perfectly for the last 4 years!

  13. Refurbish the old one if it's giving you problems - cost me less than £20 locally up here at a NON vw scene guy but if it isn't giving you issues I would leave it alone.

  15. What did he do to it for less than £20 ?

A quick wire brush and a (thin) coat of spray paint?

You have probably changed a wheelbarrow load of parts. Get them back out of the skip. You will need them soon.;)

  18. If it's not broken don't touch it. If you really feel the need to spend the money buy a nice one and carry it as a spare

  20. Opened it up, cleaned all the oil off it, put new brushes in it and fully checked it all including the solenoid and gave it a new lease of life
