which carb for vac advance -does it matter?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by olnow, Jan 7, 2013.

  1. Type 4 2 litre.

I'm about to swap my CB crossbar linkage on my DRLAs for a CSP bell crank.

The throttle activation arms hence will be on the other end of the throttle shaft (front as opposed to rear).

Can I simply swap my left and right hand carbs over, thus changing ends for the throttle levers, or do I need to swap the levers from one end to the other?

Currently my vac advance is on the left carb - will it matter if ends up on the right hand one?
    Anybody know this?

    Cheers Oliver

  2. Hi mate Im not knowledgeable on this but am gearing up to fit dells on my type 4 motor. Had em on before but took em back off as I had other engine issues to attend to. By Bell Crank do you mean a central rotating cam with threaded rods operating the throttle arms. If so thats what I have. Can provide pics tomos if needed.

Why are you changing linkages? Incidentally the throttle arm linkages will be at the rear of the engine ie nearest the tailgate. Swapping the carbs over shouldnt make any difference at all as they are pairs - you can put them either side.

Incidentally I havent sorted your dosh out but thanks very much - arrived today. All up and running now.

Back to the Dells - what size chokes are you using?

  3. Yep - deja-vu! just read back on previos dell thread. Guess I will keep asking the same questions over and over again until I get em fitted.

  4. I'm changing linkage as I prefer the neatness of the bell crank set up, and its less to wear out.

Shows where the linkage connects to the front of the carb (this is a porsche 914, but same engine).

I seem to recall I'm running 30s, in DRLA 36s, but these are perhaps a little on the small size (but good for torques)

  5. Tar. well I had thought my likages were the other side but now Im doubting my memory. Will check.

Ive got 28, 32 and 24 vents and matching mains (figuratively speaking). Might just message Silver to see how hes got on with his 32s.

  6. Does anybody know if it matters which side the vac advance comes from (as my first post above?)

    thanks

    Oliver

  7.
  8. It worked fine previously. Using the vac port, not a manometer one. Have got an anti pulse valve thou.

  9. Should be fine, then :).

  10. Let's hope so! Thanks for your input - appreciate it.

Alas the supplied pull rods on the linkage are a tad short for my engine / manifold combination, so an email to CSP to see if they'll send me some longer ones is in order.

Am liking the linkage so far - so simple compared to the CB hex arm I had previously
