Which blue is this ?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Glenny500, Mar 20, 2018.

  1. Have a blue bus and about to make that critical decision on colour for a respray. It is a light blue at the moment (see picture with flowers (blue3). Had paint matched and it turns out the closest they can get is a suzuki blue

Its either go to Orient Blue (original) or try and find a close colour in a lighter blue. have found 2 for sale today, which are what looks like a similar blue. Any ideas if this is a standard colour or just a non VW colour someone has chosen.

Just want to find out if the blue used in the two pics looks like an original colour or not.

If not i sense i will be going for the slightly darker Orient Blue. Mine is in blue 3, the others are not mine and just random pictures off gumtree or Jk for sale page.

    Cheers

  3. I think I’d go for white over blue2, with white walls, stock height. Da da da da darrrr, I’m lovin it.

I would go fo a VW colour, on a late bay Flipper Blue all over no white is my fave

  5. If you go to thesamba they have the colour charts for each year, if you want original. If you don’t want original, go for whatever you like. Personally, I dig the sky blue they use on current model Porsches.

  7. I would say somebody has poorly matched some orient blue. Just go with that if it's original to your bus

  8. Best colour in the world, although my bus is Neptune blue

  12. Thanks. That’s what I was thinking to do rather than trying to match up mythical colours.

I dont know if this should be relevant but it might be worth choosing a colour that is available at your local car emporium in standard rattle cans, or the mix is a standard named colour and/or you can get rattle cans of identical mixed paint from the same paint suppliers your paint shop uses.

My local people do an Orient Blue 2K aerosol mix which is pretty close to what Autoperfection put on 8 years back , of course blues do fade.

All depends whether a spray job is something you put on and leave until it bubbles through with rust in which case any colour is OK , or you have a policy of trying to patch it up as you go, in which case getting more paint will be important.

It's difficult to judge a colour from photos...mine was sprayed Orient Blue 8+ years ago, and resprayed this winter...it ended up with a full bottom half respray as paint supplier had 3 goes at matching, but failed to get it spot on!
The photos are all supposedly the same colour. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

  15. 3 looks like Dove blue. L31. If it is it is a colour that was used on Splits and early bays. It is a lovely colour though. so much so that we had our bus painted dove blue. It was Brilliant Orange, but mainly rust, when we bought the van.

  16. So I took a gamble and went back to the orignal 'Orient Blue'. Very happy with the result so far. Now just need to sort out the Windows

Orient Blue is a lovely colour imho.

The original year correct colour may also add to its long term value.
