Currently on my 1600 it's fitted with what I presume is called pancake filter Here it is with the top off. As you can see the breather pipe is just pushed into the side of it I heard all sorts of horror stories about these filters catching fire, has anyone got a recommendation of what I should change too, or what to replace this one with?
Try eBay. With a single carb, stock is best. Yours'll either be an oil bath or paper type. Look at the mounting bracket on the side of the engine compartment. If it's round, it's oil bath. If it's straight, paper type. Chuck the chrome thing away.
Will it make a difference if the engine isn't original? Or is the difference it just down to a bracket to hold the filter ?
Oil bath type for round stand http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OIL-BATH-...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5653322f5b
I'm confused my van doesn't appear to have any bracket Or is it that small bit next the black circle?
Nope. If its paper type it's an L shaped steel bracket with a spring clip on the end to hold the filter. It's a good 6" long ooh err missus. The oil type is a big round sort of platform that the filter sits on. Yours has probably been cut out.
Your going to need a bracket cut from a scrap van aswell as an airfilter They often get cut out when people fit twin carbs
Not really dude The stock filter set up is the best for a standard single carb as it has the oil breather connected to it aswell as a warm air pre heat pipe
If you can afford it a twin carb upgrade will make a big difference to the drivability of your bus as it removes the most restrictive part of the vw design However id check all other aspects of your engine are in good fettle before splashing out
Engine is a a UG engine code Brazilian , it's only done about 20k miles and is in good condition. Tempted to do a bit of research
