Hi I am looking to get some wood to make new door cards and wondering where you would recommend. I see a common material is 3mm ply- is this the best and where can I pick it up from? Thanks
Unfortunately b&q don't do 3mm ply and be heard that ply is much stronger and not as likely to absorb water as mdf
You can buy them ready made reasonably cheaply (mdf). The originals were hardboard which is similar to mdf.
Won't ply last alot longer than mdf? I have all of the woodwork tools so just thought it would be cheaper to do myself than buy them & that way I could spend more in the finish
i used 4mm ply as this was all i could find close to me at the time. got it from a wood yard. i have seen a kit on ebay about 90 quid. all panels including kick panels with all holes and openings pre cut. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-T2-Door-Cards-Trim-Panels-New-Bay-window-68-79-complete-set-in-plywood-/221170025218?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item337ec2c302
£33 a pair for cab door cards - more than I thought. I take it you have some to copy? If not, the fixing holes are off centre compared to the holes in the door and for the faff of working it out TBH I'd buy them. JK until quite recently were doing a pair of original looking vinyl covered door cards for £70 which was a very good price, but I can't see them on the site now.
Yep got the tools & saw the jk door cards but unfortunately around anymore. Seen that delilahs will cover them for a pretty good price
Hi Nicko , go with 4mm ply and varnish it to preserve or use spray on laquer . If you dont have a template you can buy the plastic membranes from ebay and use as templates then use the membranes to protect on your doors afterwards ! There not exact but make agood starting point if you have nothing else mate ? Good luck and don't forget to post the results 8)
I've got the templates from the originals in my bus and I sublet my warehouse to a carpentry company. They can make any / all the cards you need. All holes drilled etc if needed. The first set we did was done in hardboard but we found it to be really hard to bend once covered, (mainly for the kick boards), so we've used mdf for these but we can do them in whatever material you want. To be honest, the 'getting them wet' issue only comes into play if the can leaks and is suggest you get that fixed before you spend lots of money to make the interior look nice.
