  1. Don't know if this helps or you have sorted but this is my throttle spring location on a 76 with type 4

It will, I've worked on a few original x-overs with no engine hatch and 1700 engines. They usually have eberspachers in the engine bay too, presumeably the owners weren't shy about ticking all the option boxes!
As above there will be a hole in the steelwork for the spring.

Type 2 1700. appears as CA 0 000 001 from 1Aug 1971 in my VW service M engine manual which was last updated in 1974...

  6. Mine has a production date of 30 Nov 71 and was according to the M plate fitted with a Type 4 (CB) 1679

Its a cross over that then headed off to New Orleans. Mines on a K plate as being registered from 1 Jan 72.

I haven't got an engine hatch above either

Also there will be two threaded holes on the engine bay roof for attaching the snail fan ....and possibly loose wiring .

    Type 4.
The CB Type 4 1700 was also used from August ’71 to December ’73. Based on VAG engine code data last updated 03/08/2015 17:01.

  9. Mine (1600) already had the threaded holes, but they had rivets in them to hold up the sound deadening panels. There are actually four threaded holes, looks like you can mount the fan centrally, or toward the RHS like this 1972 example...

I couldn't find any threaded holes at all on mine .
I had to use rivnuts to secure my snail fan on the engine roof . I took off all the roof holed plates as they were contaminated in oil , no sign of any fixings .
Mine is a March 73 model originally with a 16oo ,some one put a 2ltr in it in the late nineties

  11. Mine is a '72 crosser with the metal deadening panels with glassfibre above, not the hardboard (late) type

Yes there the ones . Have you made your own hatch or is it a cut off another . Would like to do the same with mine ...might buy a cut if i see one , just in case i fancy doing it .
How swift did you manage to do it ?

  14. I got a hatch body cut. TBH it was a real pain. I think late bays may have a hatch-shaped recess in the floor above the engine, which may make things easier. with the van stripped completely it took me all day. Lots of drilling out spot-welds . It looks cool now, time will tell if it's worth it.

You only really need the hatch if you have the aux fan IMO. Putting a fan in line near the front worked for me and was very much easier and faster. I rarely use it.

Do you have a hatch on yours Zedders ...i know it's a type 4 you have , can't remember what year your bus is ?

    It's a 75 that had a 1600 originally, so no hatch.

The worst ones to work on are the crossovers with 1700's, no hatch, aux fan, original carbs and filter and an eber in the engine bay ducted past the lh carb. Nightmare! No wonder they added the hatch.

What size type 4 seem to recall being a 1700 ...do they have the 3 or 5 rib box with them ?
My 2ltr had a 3 rib ,very frustrating combination all be it worked .
Took the expensive plunge and bought the 6 rib that Brothernumberone had for sale .
Told me it came out of a low mileage 79 panel van of a friend of his , who told him the box was sound .
So i didn't bother getting it looked over and put it in, fingers crossed and it was ok .
A hugh difference particularly on motorways .

    1700, 3 rib
    1800, 5 rib
    2000, 6 rib
I also got myself a 6 rib box a couple of engines/1 van ago. It wouldn't be the right box for the more power (as opposed to torque) based 1700 though.
