Wheel nuts

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Coco, Sep 1, 2015.

  1. Hi folks,

Any advice on removing wheel nuts that are rusted tight and a bit rounded off? I have tried Plusgas etc and even a blowtorch, but I'm worried about a possible fire.

Should I just grind them down as far as I can and then chisel off the remainder?

    Cheers,

    Coco

Could you get it to a garage, their windy guns can loosen most things

And if it can't you might be lucky and the mechanic will feel that the stubborn nut refusing to undo has issued a direct challenge to his masculinity and competence. If that happens then you know he will slave over the wheel nuts for as long as it takes and use every trick in his repertoire to undo them.

Get a slightly smaller hexagon socket, 18mm possibly, knock it on with a hammer

be warned it may ruin your socket

  4. Or use a heavy duty 6 sided hex socket rather than the standard multi point type. The hex puts more load on the flats, rather than on the (rounded off) corners.

  5. Buy a set of locking nut removers, they grip tighter the more force you put in.
They'll feck up the nut but it'll either come off or the stud will snap.

  6. I would..:D

  7. Cheers lost-en-france, that's what I'l:thumbsup:l do.
