When I was at school in the 60s I'm sure they were called Gonks, or am I being stupid?

A Troll Doll is a type of plastic doll with furry up-combed hair depicting a troll, also known as a Dam doll after their creator Danish woodcutter Thomas Dam, or a Gjøl troll, after his hometown of Gjøl. The toys are also known as good luck trolls, or alternatively gonk trolls in the United Kingdom.

Don't remember the badge ones, do remember the pencil top ones.
Mrs T, having been a girl all her life, does remember them and they're not known as Gonks round here.
A Gonk is 'a spherical or egg-shaped doll with frizzy hair.'
