Inspired by the house naming thread does anyone else know the history of their house, what was there before? I live in a 1969 built semi that is built on the site of a former disused railway station.

This is the station and a picture showing the closing - behind the closing down picture you can see the bridge at the bottom of my road which makes good reference.

The station was demolished in the late 60's and when alive my mom could remember catching the train from there, a few years ago they widened the line from 2 to 4 tracks and i was able to photograph little snippets of the past.

This picture shows the footbridge supports which is right outside my house.

Here is the brickwork which would have supported the platform, ignore the metal rods they were added to support the new track wall

Here's a ticket i managed to get off ebay

We got a folder about 2 inch think when we purchased this house. Not sure how far it goes back as I haven't looked at it for 10 plus years.

  4. Our entire housing estate was built on what used to be a large sand quarry. My next door neighbour, who is retired, has told me about when he used to play in the sand when he was a kid.

  5. My old house was built on grounds of an old rope factory, the rope path and stream ran down thru my back garden ,they used to make rope for ships, industry etc.

  6. We just bought a new house, there was a 1970's 'Crossroads' style hotel here before. However, there has been a coaching inn here for more than 300 years. 20 Houses now

i love modern history/archaeology like this - you can see how stories distort through time though - its only 8 years since i took them photos and yet even my mind is clouded - imagine without photos how things can become exagerated.
I've got a fair few pictures of the village i live in - i've not moved in 44 years wish i had more though i can remember a lot from my youth but would love to see pictures now, i think it's a man thing - the older you get the more the past interests you?

  8. Our house was built for naval officers in the days of wooden sailing ships, some of the roof trusses were bits of galleons. Its a georgian jobby so a bugger to heat cos of the sash windows. Prior to ww1 there was a german photographer living here until he got caught taking pictures of navy ships in the dockyard and was banged up for being a spy.

  12. Oh and during the thirties and forties the house was owned by an old school shopfitter (wooden shop fronts, cabinets etc proper stuff) The workshop is attached to the house but has been sold on (bah) , when the war came along they turned it over to making floating targets for the navy to practice with. We still have the rail in the garage that they use to push them out with on to the back of a lorry.

The rough square of green is where my current house now sits. In the NE corner near the A is a single garage completely covered in ivy and in the SW corner is the remains of an old pig sty.

  19. My house is built on the site of the old Worcester jail. They use to hang folk there too - lots of 'em apparently, over a couple of hundred years. Once I saw a map marking out where the gallows was. It's right under my kitchen floor. Which is nice. ;)
