What temp gauge?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Jun 12, 2014.

  1. Right guys, I have some spare wire laid from the front to the back of the van so I was toying with the idea of a temperature gauge. I see there is a dipstick sensor and one for the sump. Whats the one to use? I also don't fancy boring holes into my nice new engine so preferably retro fit only. What do you guys have and how do you mount them so they don't look too out of place? Cheers in advance guys!!!

my van has a cylinder head temp gauge, sensor fits under number 3 plug - no drilling required.

  3. picture of that in situ would be good so i could grasp where it goes?

what part of it - the gauge or the sensor pick up?

  5. good question, both would be ideal as i have never seen one in the flesh/photo flesh

well basically (as the van is at home) the pick up is some sort of copper based? washer that sits under the spark plug the wire goes through the tin to the front of the van and theres a normal round gauge in a holder by the steering wheel, i can do pic's later of the gauge but the sender is not visible really

    dipstick

I found the sump one was not as good

  8. May I ask why?

  9. The VDO oil temp gauge is ok. Mine under-read by about 5º, but that's not too bad. Use the dipstick sender - sump is just faff as doesn't really give any benefit. Fit a two-way connector to the sender and earth leads so you can unplug them from the top of the dipstick before pulling it out.

My gauges live under the dash - their final resting place after trying other places. i'll post a pic if I get the time.

the sump one did not give as accurate reading and took longer to react ,The dip stick one that was spot on.
It may of just been the sender or it may be as it screws into the sump so is cooled by the metal

  11. I'd like to see that if you can post a picture

  13. I'm thinking of getting the dipstick type once my engine is fixed, as I don't actually have a proper dipstick on my type 4 engine. The JK bundle which includes the gauge and dipstick sender plus wires is quite reasonable. I'll fit the gauge in my spare dash pod I think

  14. Mine are here;-

  15. Dipstick sender for me too :)

I tested it to see how accurate it is

Then used a couple of magnets to keep the dipstick handy for oil checks

Dipstick sender with long enough wires on it and a bit of a curve on the top so I can pull it out without disconnecting the wires which are fixed down over by the battery. Although I scratched marks on it to match the real dipstick I still keep the original one around because the end of the dipstick sender acts as a piston and drops the oil level in the dipstick tube so you end up drastically over filling with oil on a cold day. Btw you can suck excess oil out of the dipstick tube with a suction pump if you have overfilled it..

  17. Here y'go - connector's 40p from your friendly motor factors. Just pulls off (I use the original stick for dipping).

  18. i have tis one too ,its fine and ive kept the old dipstick for oil level as filing the gauge one didnt appeal and the old one is easier to read , my gauge is cut into clock space as i cant afford a clock n they keep me awake when ive not had enuff to drink too , i keep mine old one by the battery

  19. I have a oil pressure sensor which is good, and an oil temperature sensor which the sump sender does not work on, both VDO, the pressure sender goes in place of the idiot light sender and the you connect the idiot light and the gauge both to the new VDO dual sender, the sump sender will be removed on next oil change and I will be buying a dipstick sender :)
