Thinking of fitting a tacho in my bus preferably in the empty pod to the right of the speedo anyone done this and any recommendations on what to fit ... photos would be good.
I've got a Triumph Spitfire one, fitted with a bus boys tacho ring - this also fits in the empty pod, and they sometimes come up cheap on ebay.
An 80mm rev counter from a MGB is a good match to the original speedo and there are always plenty on eBay. Like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMITHS-RE...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3ccf2e5e55
A lot of MGB ones are induction pickup which doesn't work too well with 15ft of cable between the coil and rev counter. Some are also positive earth too, so be careful what you get.
Yes, that's the one we've got. Worked fine with the type 1 aircooled engine we had, works fine with the Scooby we have now.
The 80mm rev counters were only fitted to late (rubber bumper) MGB, note that is an 80mm rev counter in the eBay link I posted. The very early induction pickup/positive earth are scarce and too large to for the Bay, the difference is obvious, if it’s 80mm it will fit and work, if its 100mm (4”) with an ignition light at the bottom it won’t, so DON’T try to use one like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MIDGET-RE...233&pid=100011&prg=1005&rk=3&sd=300547800906&
Incidentally, I used a wire from the redundant diagnostic plug in the engine bay to the dashboard for the rev counter so wiring was simple.
