What Oil for 1977 T2 2Lit. CJ engine

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SeanOC, Sep 5, 2013.

  1. Hi, when I bought Cyril I was told by the PO that he used SAE30 Oil & looking in forums this seemed ok.

Just been speaking to a T1/T2 restoration mechanic and he said that's right for a 1600 but my 2Lit should use 10-40 as the 30 is too thick.

Has anyone any thoughts on this please, before I replace, my just installed, oil & filter?

  2. Your mechanic is right.
    Thread over. :D

  6. I use this too

  7. Sae 30 should be fine - also 15w/40, 15w/50, 20w/50 & 20w/40 - these are all recommended by VW:

If they re-wrote the book now theres no way they'd recommend SAE30. (Because its crap)

  10. what he said!

  11. I've never used it, but I'm sure it won't kill an engine if used once. I have always used 20w/50 or 20w/40 but as that has become harder to source 15w/40 Castrol

Just out of interest though, why is it crap?

    Its too thin once hot.
The guy I bought mine off used it; the oil light used to flicker at junctions after a run as the pressure dropped. Changed to 1ow50 and its been fine ever since.

    15w40 will be fine.

  15. Its a mongrade and as said above doesnt cope well at higher engine temps. I used to get a lot more leaks with this and I couldnt swear to it but think the engine runs cooler on the multigrade which are designed for a range of ambient and engine temps.

  16. was this meant for me?
