What holds the outer part of the steering column in place?

  1. My question is because my outer section and indicator housing moves round a few millimeters clockwise and back. Also what stops it lifting out? Is it just the little plastic bush thing where it goes through the plate on the floor?

A 74 with this housing. Thanks bay [IMG]

  2. I'm presuming it is just the housings for the indicator and wiper switch that is moving, and not the whole column or ignition switch housing.

if it just the switch section, inside them are 2 (each side) cresent metal locating spacers. These have a 'pin'/'lug' in the inner center of the cresents which locates in a corresponding recess in the column area to stop them moving

often the pin/lug gets worn on the cresents and you get movement

  3. Thanks. The outer column is also moving ?

  4. then you are right, the plastic bush at the bottom of the column stops that moving, but it should also be tight in the ignition housing to stop the top moving ....and the ignition housing being bolted to the dash should stop the lot moving.

under the wiper and indicator switch housings (with them removed) you should see a large circlip which holds in a large washer over a rubber bush, and the compressed rubber should stop the lot spinning

....at least that is what it looked like when I stripped mine down :D

  5. What years yours dids as I havent got that?

  6. mines an Aug 72 build 73 registered

  7. Will have alook at some point perhaps it my memory playing up as mines around the same build date. It gonna be the same!

  8. Mine seems to have the bit down the bottom, then it goes through a rubber ring/bush in the ignition housing. Nothing seems to actually stop it from being lifted up or holds it that well ?
