Westfalia Furniture and Laminate for replacement/repair

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lofty, Jun 29, 2012.

  1. Hi Guys
I was looking at a post the other day that listed a good German source for Westy Furniture and Laminate (I think) but stupid me (doh) forgot to bookmark. Anyone got any ideas off the top of their head who I might be thinking of. The only thing I can remember was that the site was quite colourful (?)
    cheers

the laminate is not an exact match it will be obvious if you try to mix and match its only really good for a whole interior imho, how much do you need?

  3. Hi Davidoft
Actually I do not have a van yet but I am getting close hopefully ! I've seen a few that seem to have different +/- points and my budget is not bottomless for the total package, so I am trying to work out for each van what it might cost to get it to what I would call good (not perfect) condition. Areas that seem to be key other than bodywork is de-laminating doors etc. and torn seats (or even seats from another vehicle). I've had a hunt for late bay seats but they seem like hens teeth !

  4. What year and what do you need? I will be selling a 1972 Westy interior shortly - just need to work out exactly what's there and what's not there before listing it in FS&W

Thanks for the heads up but I am still hunting for a bus. The enquiry was to help me understand costs and availability of Westys furniture when I'm looking around at buses.

  6. Has anyone taken on a Westy Berlin and relaminated part or all of the interior ? I've seen a bus that looks sound on bodywork with a good engine but the interior is pretty shabby due to laminate chipped/peeling off etc.
Davidoft has mentioned the mismatch on laminates so I am thinking I could do the whole lot. Adventurous I know but worth it in the long run if it all looks nice.
    Has anyone done this ?

  7. Hi Lofty,

This might be the colorful site you are looking for :

Although a sheet of very close laminate is only about £40. but you would need to do all the funiture, which takes ages. I've done a whole interior - I'll post pictures eventually (van at paintshop at the moment)

  11. Hi,

    Laminate came from

    International Decorative Surfaces

    http://www.idsurfaces.co.uk/

Really great suppliers, I just popped along to their trade counter with my dash table, and got a very close match. I was rebuilding a Berlin Kitchen unit (adding a fridge) so the difference was OK - main one was the laminate has no knots.

Laminate was .8mm Resopal 'pure latino cherry' E 4327-90 HGP, which of course is no longer made....but they have some in stock still .

I used 2 sheets, and did berlin kitchen unit, all side panels, over head unit (my own design), the overhead boot cupboard (head banger), a full width rock and rool bed and the free standing unit behind the passenger seat.

I used two sheets of off white to do the headlining.

As for time? 10s of hours spread over many months - you need a router. Each cupboard door needs 4 bits of laminate, so thats a minimum of 10 router passes + final filing etc per door. This is after cutting the sheets, and gluing. Not a small task, but well worth it

  12. Coming back to this now as I have a van, and I was wondering if olnow might post some pics and if bertiebot started to repair his units yet ?

As you can see, just about every panel needs a repair, so the plan is to recover all door face etc.

  13. We have decided that its patina and we are going to leave it for now. To be honest I have a few more jobs to do first. I have the bits to reinstate the heater system and also want to drop the engine to sort a few bits and bobs in the engine compartment. Still interested to see pics of someone does the deed.

Here is a link to a "How to remove your Westy interior" on the Samba if anyone is interested.

  16. Its taken a while, but here are a few of my interior ' in process' - the uphosltery will be changed eventually, curtains and pelmets replace, gaps round edge of floor sorted.
Photos have a poor colour balance, as I left the westy flouresent tube light on, but you get the idea:

here is the Berlin unit (none-delux sink only model), now with twin burner, fridge etc. All relaminated. New cupboard for tea and stuff above
