Welding Course

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Louise, May 24, 2019.

  1. Has anyone been on, or can recommend, a welding course? Day, weekend etc? Can’t find an evening one or anything at local educational establishments.

Just for basic bodywork etc. Nothing huge.

Look at technical colleges offering post-16 education.

For example I found three in Hampshire offering evening classes .
    Southampton City College (my choice)
    Sparsholt College (Winchester)
    Andover College.

I also know that West Dean College does an intensive 3 day full time course on welding but that also involved blacksmithing techniques, along with electric welders. The course tutor was an artist/bkacksmith.

Southampton City course fee was £345 for 10 weeks of 2 hours from 1800 to 2000 in the evening of "come and try stuff with nice welding machines with free consumables" with an instructor on hand to teach safety and advise on technique. You could either do your own project (one guy welded up a Triumph car wing) or follow a terms worth of tech college welding course.

If I had been running my own welder as hard as I ran the college kit it would have cost me about £150 for the gas and consumables.

I enjoyed my time there , I am thinking of going back this autumn to play more with TIG welding.
And experience the general wierdness and kindness of the course tutor..

I went on both their introductory course and automotive course to get up to speed about 4 years ago and would thoroughly recommend it. Got me going on it and ended up doing all the welding on our bus. Rob is very knowledgeable.

  4. Been there and done that. Bloke was really nice and helpful. At least half the day was spent stick welding thick plate, but later in thd day we got to have z go at thin sheet. I took my own new mig welder and he set it up for me and helped me to start getting some decent welds going.

  5. Unfortunately I can’t find any at local colleges like similar! I went to college in the evenings to learn to upholster... I thought they’d do a welding evening course. :(

  6. So would you say it’s worth it?

  7. Yes. Gave me a good grounding. It was particularly good to take my own mig along so I'd recommend getting some gear first. I then spent some time practising on my own at home and reading the mig welding forum. I wouldn't say I'm a superstar but I have welded a good deal of metal into my bus and it's pretty solid!
