Weird indicators - is this normal?

  1. Hi all

My pal Paul has just bought a 79 Westy that was imported from the USA a while back. We just had a fab weekend in Edale and whilst driving back with him folowing I noticed his indicators appeared to be on permanently when he put his lights on as it got dark.

We stopped to investigate and the rear ones behave as normal but the front ones appear to have two bulbs in each. They flash as normal when you use them but over the top of what seems to be always on running lights.

Sorry I don't have a photo but we reckoned either A) They were made that way or B) He's got a wiring fault. Either way they need sorting as they don't look right for UK driving.

Are USA buses supposed to behave like this?

  2. sounds like US spec...think it's normal....take a bulb out and try it

  3. I always thought those Americans were a bit odd.

US Spec - the sidelights are in the indicators opposed to headlights...I have mine as per the US spec with no issues, the beams are set for the UK roads ok, so Im running like that!

  5. Thanks guys

I did look a bit weird so I suspect Paul may mod them to normal UK format

easy enough to do - you do need a pair of UK headlamps as the US has no sidelight bulb cutout, reroute the cable (or patch in & have the indicator side lights too)

if you want the front indicators only you'll need to isolate the sidelight feed to them - there are actually 2 bulbs in there - a small 5watt one for the side marker and a 21/5 for indicator and front marker (like a stop/tail bulb) you'll then need to feed the side wire to uk headlights for a white sidelamp - personally i like the orange and i made the doors light up too.

They look great but l would say that

On a serious note, how did it get a UK MOT?? Vehicles need white side lights.

you don't need white sidelights if it was never fitted with them

i just added them for more lights

  14. what ive done with us bays in past is swap the og sealed beam light units to rhd classic mini h4 lamps (fit straight in and on ebay for less than £30 all in) then just pull the old feeds from the indicator side marker bulbs and wire them into the mini side lamp bulbs simples

  16. I confess that I bought a decent set of US front indicator bodies off theSamba, and kept the orange running lights. Think they look rather cool, and - as far as I can determine - amber lights to the front is fine in the UK.

White sidelights for the MOT, please. It's in The Book Of Rulz.

it's in the book of rules for vehicles "manufactured" with them but i was told on 1st mot that if not made that way then amber was fine, as long as you do not show red to the front of the vehicle it's fine.
