Weber twin 40 IDF question

  1. I have just ordered a CB Performance Weber 40 IDF kit - part number 6409
for my 1776 type 1 engine in my 1979 Bay.

I read somewhere that in order to fit this kit you have to change the fan shroud to a 36hp version for clearance, which was a bit of a shock.
Has anyone fitted this kit with success or run into this problem - with a later upright doghouse fan shroud?

Or you fix your existing fan housing so the heater air outlets are either blocked or hammered out of the way.
That way you keep the doghouse oil cooler too .

I hope your engine is significantly bigger than stock (1776 not really) or next you will be complaining about fuel pressure and difficult tuning unless you bought smaller venturis to bring them back to a sensible size.

Also have you got extra oil cooling, to go with the slighlty increased power...

These are Dell 40's - similar carbs. I think it depends on where your particular manifolds place the carbs to whether they avoid the widest part of the fan housing. If it looks like a bit higher would solve it, you could make some thick heat insulators. I didn't have to remove the heater outlets, I just did because I fitted j-tubes and thought the outlets were ugly. :) It was tight, but they did fit. If I were you I would do all I could to retain that fan housing, the aftermarket ones are sh1te. You could also bash the wide part in a bit, you wouldn't be the first!

  4. As @Zed says, will likely depend on what manifolds they supply.

I’ve got a pair of Dell 40s (similar), and they don’t clout the shroud. Your existing stock shroud is much better than a 36hp curvy job, so worth keeping.

  5. If you have the block off plate for the cold start set up you should be fine.

it’s the small shiny plate in the pic

I ran Dell 40’s and IDF 36’s on my Type 1 motor in 1600, 1776 and 1916 set ups with no problems.

Make sure you you have quality paper manifold gaskets and some of the small body (11mm) 13 mm nuts for the manifolds.
You can actually get a spanner on them with those.
