Watercooled bay windows (those odd brazilian ones)...

  1. Just incase anyone is thinking of fitting a watercooled engine (shock horror:p) to their bay, heres some piccies of what the watercooled brazilian bay window looks like underneath.

Pictures shamelessly stolen off the brazilian bay forum.

paradox, Stan and fritt like this.
  2. Some interesting plumbing under there.

  3. Apparently a boggo 8v Golf engine will fit also but cant be 100% sure? Mate has just got one for his T25 and will be fitting it shortly.
I understand the scubbie conversions can turn out quite expensive?
As much as I love aircooled I may even consider such an option if I get too old and need decent heating from a radiator!!!!

  4. Ironically the brazibays dont come with heaters as standard so you still have to do it yourself or pay your money to Danbury !!

was only talking to ex forumee moons today and he wondered if anyone had retrofitted a new watercooled vw into a latebay, we wondered what box they use and if it was easier/cheaper than scooby converts?

  6. Believe the Danburys have a Webasto/Eberspacher jobby mounted at the front.

  7. To me the 1.4 ecoflex engine looks a little odd in the engine compartment as its canted about 15 degrees to the right from vertical.
The diesel engines fitted to t25s are leaned 50 degrees to the left to fit under the engine lid.
The golf gti engine will fit a bay gearbox with an adapter plate and can be mounted at the same 15 degrees to the left as in a golf as theres enough headroom in the engine compartment.
You could always use a bellhousing from a t25 diesel mounted to the bay gearbox to fit a golf engine, but you'd also need the diesels sump (which is getting hard to find) and a t25 diesel oil pump.

I'm currently looking into fitting a 2.0l gti engine to my t25 as the 1.9wbx is underpowered, leaking and expensive to fix. A complete golf will cost me £2-300 and a load can be sold off making it cost effective.

Subaru conversions can be pricey if you use the bellhousing and all the rest of the kit from RJES (budget on £2k or so).

The van in the piccies has the heater connected as you can see the two hoses in the 3rd piccy down (just above the servo).

  8. We've got a mk2 8v gti engine and wiring loom sat in the shed, we were going to put that on the bay box via a kennedy (from states) adaptor plate, but it's now redundent as we've sold Noah. If you look at vwkd forum there's a load of info about conversions and the cooling side on there;)

  9. my 1.9 in the T25 has loads of power [70-80 mph] , in the Pyrenees it had no troubles with the hills ,the bay struggled...

My mate in Cornwall put a transit engine in his T25 ,they are cheap?

  10. Interesting pictures - lots of plumbing needed to run to the radiator on the front. The radiator slung underneath needs a lot less spaghetti. I also notice that the brazillians are using beetle gearboxes, and not the bigger beefier ones used in 70's bays. They've also got king and link pin suspension at the front, not balljoint like ours.

If anyone is curious about the Golf GTi engine option - I know a guy with an prototype bay who is doing this to his. I think you have to get the sump from a t25 diesel to do it because the engine is canted over in order to fit in the engine bay.

what we need is someone rich to buy a subaru boxer diesel and do that conversion

  12. Surely the radiator on the front isn't needed, all they needed to do was run the water pipes up the central warm air pipe, to the front and back again. The flipping warm air in my bus is cold by the time it gets there so the water should be cooled perfectly :D

  13. Look for mot failed Golfs on gumtree. My
Mate got one for £350 , just for the engine, he will sell the rest off or just scrap it, will pay for the engine. Simples...
I seem to remember someone used 2x smaller rads in the rear air vents instead of one up front(under the front pedal cluster) so there are other other options...
Btw his T25 is the 1.9 diesel and smokes a lot only reason he is sticking in the golf engine.
You can go for VR6 etc etc but there are always issues with the more powerful engines, usually related to rpm and torque etc , depends what you want really.
The brazibays use a 1.4 polo engine(can run on booze), splittie kingpins etc and a reverse mounted 1303 beetle gearbox for some reason ??? Shows you how tuff they are eh?

Thanks the pics, Interesting to see the setup of the new waterpumper bus,

Heres one I made earlier, with a Golf 16v ABF engine from a mk3 golf gti.

    Same bus from the front,

Its just been painted, but note the radiator is mounted behind the front panel - as theres an extra lower grille, and its using a bigger splitscreen badge with the front panel cut behind to aid cooling, As could never get it to cool effectively with a radiator mounted underneath, but think that could have been due to the fact normal radiators wont work too well when mounted horizontally.

Runs a T25 DK diesel gearbox as the same ratios as a 6 rib CP, T25 diesel bellhousing/sump and as shown the engine leans over on its back, and had to crudely modify the fuel tank and fuel tank bulkhead panel to allow clearance for the distributor, its running the standard golf radiator with an additional electric water pump up front and aluminium tube for the rad pipework to the back.

  15. being a purist when it comes to vw's,,this is wosml

  16. The 1.9 has 78bhp which is OK but not earth shattering. Still better than a 1.6 bay. 2.0 gti has 115bhp.
My wbx needs the headgaskets doing (theres a high probablity the headstuds snap undoing them) and a new exhaust which is nearly £550. Gti is cheaper option. Just need to find an adapter plate for an autobox. Kennedy in the US seem the only place.:(

  17. Mine has a 2.3 V6 cologne

  19. That's right - you need a custom radiator with a scoop underneath it. This is mine:

As well as the scoop underneath, it has 2 fans on the back which kick in at a certain temperature. With all the recent cold weather, we haven't reached that temperature yet.

  20. What rad are you using? and any more pics? looks neat and tidy
