Want to watch you bus go up in flames?

  1. As the weather is nice & your thinking of going for a drive, open your engine bay reach your hand behind the spare wheel well, you will discover 2 metal pipes that join together with a little 40mm length of rubber pipe, this pipe is probably knackered in your van, if the metal pipes are out of alignment then it sure is boy! If your not sure change it anyway, it just pulls off. Put a new piece of 7mm pipe on. Get it from Halfords or somewhere else. Make sure its un-leaded fuel rated & made from reinforced stuff not that cotton overbraided crap sold in GSF!
    Do it now!
    Don't put it off!
I'm sure this has been said before in the tech section, some numpties don't read that!
Report your findings here, which pictures of your old bit of pipe.

  2. ...just as i read this radio 2 travel reported camper on fire :(

  3. Already had to do this as the first time i filled my van to the brim it all started to come out through this.

  4. What exactly are these things anyway?

It's part of the tank breather system.
Taking the rear light cluster out as above makes it a really simple job.

  6. pipes that come from your fuel tank that condense vapour. You can see the other parts of them if you look inside your vents at the back of the bus they then join back together in the engine bay in a T.

  8. I bet you any money it was breather hoses & they probably just filled up. I'm convinced its why my bus went up on fire. :(

cheers chris i never did this part when i did mine i'll take a look soon, i did check the top of the tank through the access panel and they looked good so because i didn't wanna take out the firewall etc i left them, i also still need to do the filler pipes but i can't get to them through the paint can lid as my hands are too big.

In the few weeks I had my bus up and running and possible on its 3rd tank fill I had that very one go on my bus shortly after I filled up. Unlike a fuel leak on the engine it's not likely to have caused a fire. It will drop onto the wheel arch and run out on the floor via a drain gap between the arch tub and battery tray but it is important that they are replaced. I'd also add some clips to them too just to seal them good and proper.

ah well i'm affraid i have large hands and fat wrists........ to be fair i don't think that the tank breathers and fillers would actually result in fire more than wasted fuel if full, the main cause of fire i imagine is crap pipes in the engine bay?

  15. On my last van I changed the lot apart from that one, cos I didn't know about it, I had just filled the tank. I read before that the changer where the tank is gets warm, the fuel expands & travels up the breather, once it starts to come out of the perished pipe it only needs a spark from a bad connection in the back light & its all over.
