If you need an external regulator for an alternator, that looks to be the kind of generic part that will do.

That’s the one I’ve used for the last 4 years - but I didn’t buy it from Heritage. https://www.woodauto.com/product/VRG3639

  3. I have only ever used the mechanical type .. it’s a fraction of the size and at £20 I didn’t think it too bad . I was unsure of the 45 year old one
    Thanks

  4. Assume your 914 does have an alternator, rather than a dynamo?

  5. yes all type 4 engined

  6. Just testing!

  7. Well not all but the six cylinder version is a little out of my range

  8. So you've got a VW, not a Porsche ;)?

It’s smaller than the clockwork type, probably about half the size but the bolts are the same between centres and it plugs in as the original. I bought the Huco version but there are plenty of other manufacturers.

  10. As I said a 914 ....:)

@lhu1281 You can have fun taking the lid off the 45-year old one, cleaning up the contacts and putting it back together. They’re surprisingly simple.

  12. @mscwiggs I was initially looking for a smart one .im sure the ogbone would be ok . just trying to eliminate any future problems ... I have a few bits like ECU and the odd relay if needed

I got one of these off eBay as it was cheaper that the usual VW suppliers. Still bog standard.
